Development of Year Round Chilli Variety Through Pure Line Selection

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2012 at Spices Research Sub-Centre, Faridpur to develop year round chilli variety with better desired qualities for green chilli and salad purpose. The experiment was carried out through pure line selection process. It was a non- replicated trial. A local germplasm C0583 was the material of this study. The growth habit of the plant was intermediate (compact) in nature which attained 85 cm in height. The leaves are green, lanceolate with entire lamina margin with 10.5cm in length and 3cm in width. The stems are angular having light purple color nodal anthocyanin. The flowers are borne singly or sometimes two at the intersection between the stem and leaves. The corolla is white, campanulate having <1.5 cm length. The fruits are elongate having 8.5 cm length and 1.5 cm width and with 3.5 cm fruit pedicel length. The average weight of individual fruit is 2.8 g.

Objectives:

To develop a year round high yielding variety with better desired qualities for green chilli and salad purposes from a land race

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2012-2013 at Spices Research Sub-centre, Faridpur to develop year round chilli variety with better desired qualities for green chilli and salad purpose The crop was fertilized with 5 t/ha of cowdung and with N100P52K100S22 kg/ha. Sources of nutrients for N, P, K and S were urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. The entire quantity of cowdung, P and 1/3 K were applied at the time of bed preparation. N and rest of K should be applied in three installments at 60, 90 and 110 days after transplanting. It was a non-replicated trial. A local germplasm C0583 was used for this study. Seedlings of 35 days old were transplanted on 26 April, 2012. 1.0m ×1.0m row and plant spacing were maintained. Weeding was done at 60, 90 and 110 days after transplanting. To control Thrips- mite complex, Regent 50SC @ 0.5ml/l of water and Vertimec 18 EC @1.2 ml/l of water 30, 40, 50 and 60 DAP. Similarly, to control Anthracnose of chilli, the crop was sprayed with Tilt 250EC @ 0.5ml/l of water of water at 45, 55, 65 and 75 DAP. Red ripe fruits were collected separately at 06 August, 2012 from the Ist harvest from the selected superior plants and then green chilli were harvested from that plants. The harvested red ripe fruits were then sun dried and stored separately. The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI, 1995) descriptors for capsicum were used to characterize the line. Data were taken on different plant and fruit characteristics (plant height, plant canopy, branching habit, leaf length and breadth, flower position, corolla color, days to fruiting, fruit length and breadth, average fruit weight etc.).

Achievement/Findings:

The characterization of base population studied line according to descriptors for Capsicum (IPGRI, 1995) is presented below: The stem of the chilli line is green, angled having light purple color nodal anthocyanin and sparse pubescence present on whole plant. The plant reaches 85 cm height with intermediate (compact) growth habit and it produces > 1m canopy width. Dense branching habit was found for that line. Leaves are green, lanceolate with entire lamina margin having dense leaf density. Sparse pubescence present on leaves. Mature leaf length and width is 10.5 cm and 3 cm, respectively. The flowers are usually borne singly and sometimes two at the intersection between the stem and leaves at points where the stem splits into two. The corolla is white, campanulate having <1.5 cm length. The anther is pale blue and the filament is white. The fruits are elongate having 8.5 cm length and 1.5 cm width and with 3.5 cm fruit pedicel length. The average weight of individual fruit is 2.8 g. Fruit shape at pedicel attachment is obtuse and blossom end is pointed. Neck at base of fruit is absent. The plant takes 70 days to fruiting and fruit set is high. Fruit colour at intermediate stage is green and mature stage is red. Calyx margin is dentate and no annular constriction and pigmentation present. The surface of the fruit is semi wrinkled.
