Eleven selected inbred lines were advanced from S1 to S2 generation in order to develop superior inbred lines for excess water tolerance. Variations were found among the S1 lines for the characters studied. Selected S1 plants were selfed. S2 seeds from selfed plants were stored for next season.

Variety and Species
To advance S2 generation from S1.
The experiment was conducted at Joydebpur, during kharif I seasone, 2009-10. The material consisted two (set I: 5 selected excess water tolerance inbred lines and set II: also 6 selected excess water tolerance inbred lines) sets of S1 lines. Seeds of both the sets were sown on 20 February and 29 March, 2010. Each S1 material was sown in single row with 5 m long plot. Spacing was 75x20 cm (one plant/hill). Fertilizers were applied @ 120, 80, 80, 20, 5 kg/ha of N, P2O5, K2O, S and Zn, respectively. After thinning, one healthy plant was kept in each hill. After earthing-up at V8 stage of growth, water was applied continuously for 6 days at 15 cm high from the soil surface. Plants kept under observation for 2 to 3 weeks without any cultural operations. Selected plants were selfed. Selfing was done by hand pollination. Data on days to pollen shedding, silking, and maturity and plant and ear height (cm), no of selfed ear harvested were recorded.
Research report 2009-10
20 ears were selected and preserved separately for advancing S2 to S3 generation in the next year for ear to row method of developing selfed population.
