The experiment was conducted with 38 accessions of Snake gourd (Trichosanthes anguina L.) collected from 8 district of Bangladesh.Viny and bushy plant growth habit, and pubescence and highly pubescent stem were found among the accessions. Small, medium and large leaf and shallow intermediate and deep leaf lobes were noted. Crooked neck, curved and elongate immature fruit shape and smooth and uneven fruit surface was found among the accessions. Light green, green to dark green were found in stem and leaf. Immature fruit skin colour was green to yellow-green along with green, white to yellow-orange in fruit stripe. Elongate, crooked neck and curved fruit shape with smooth and uneven fruit surface were exhibited among the accessions. All the accessions showed ridged stem, branched tendril and rein form leaf shape. Green fruits generally harvested in 116 days. A good range of variation were found in length of main vine (2.7 to 6.5 m), green fruit length (20.2 to 69.3 cm), fruit weight (100.04 to 387.0 g) and fruit per plant (8 to 24). The maximum and minimum CV was found in fruits per plant (31.09%) and days to first green fruit harvest (2.2%).

(i) to study the genetic diversity,

(ii) to identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another,

(iii) to identify the promising accessions for varietal development and

(iv) to increase seeds for conservation.

The experiment was carried out with 37 accessions of snake gourd at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Gazipur.The gremplasm were collected from 8 districts (Chittagong, Khagrachari, Rangamati, Coxe's bazar, Pabna, Jamalpur, Barisal and Gazipur) of Bangladesh. The seeds were planted in polybags on 19 November 2001. Twenty one days older seedling was transplanted in the prepared pit. Pit to pit distance were 4 m and two seedlings were transplanted in each pit. Ten kg of cowdung (appox.), 100 g TSP and 80 g MP were applied in each pit as basal doses. Eighty gram urea were used in each pit after seedling establishment in two equal installments of 15 days interval. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to grow a normal crop. Necessary insecticides were applied for controlling different insects. The plants were grown on 1 m height rope nets. Observations were recorded on 12 qualitative and 13 quantitative traits as per snake gourd descriptor (Descriptors for vegetables and condiments by PGRC, Sri Lanka, 1995). Mean data on 3 replications were used for statistical analysis.

Viny (33 acc.) and bushy (5) plant growth habit; pubescent (37) and highly pubescent (1) stem were found among the accessions. Medium (35), large (2) and small (1) in leaf size, and deep (26), shallow (11) and intermediate (1) leaf lobes were present. Crooked neck (23) of immature fruit shape was highest in number followed by curved (14) and elongate (1) types. Immature fruit surface were uneven (20) and smooth (18). Light green to dark green stem and leaf were observed. Immature fruit colour were green (33) and yellow-green (5), and fruit stripe colour were white (22), yellow-orange (15) and green (1). All the accessions showed branched tendril, five ridged stem, reiniform leaf, white flower and grayed-brown seed coat colour. Number of primary branches per plant ranged from 1 (BD-4465) to 4.5 (BD-4453). Length of main vine was maximum (6.5 m) in BD-4465 and minimum in BD-4449 (2.70 m). Days to first male and female flowering in BD-4442 (62 days) and BD- 4440 (80 days), respectively. Days to first green fruit harvest ranged from 110 days (BD-4433) to 121 days (BD-4428). Maximum immature fruit length (69.33 cm) and width (6.42 cm) were noted in BD-4450 and BD-4443, respectively but minimum in BD-4430 (20.20 cm) and BD-4454 (3.20 cm), respectively. Green fruit weight ranged from 110.13 g (BD-4448) to 387 g (BD-4444). The highest number of fruits (24) were obtained from BD-4428 and the lowest (8) in BD-4432. Seed length and width were ranged from 14.11 cm to 16.67 cm and 8.33 cm to 11.00 cm, respectively. Hundred-seed weight was ranged from 22.32 g to 34.64 g. The highest CV (%) was obtained from number of fruits per plant (31.09), followed by green fruit weight (30.29) and the lowest in days to first green fruit harvest (2.20).
