Genetic Analysis and Selection Criteria in Some Advanced Breeding Lines of Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to find out genetic variability, selection criteria and the characters highly responsible for high yield potential in some advanced breeding of rice. Thirty advanced breeding lines of deep water rice were grown in a randomized complete block design under transplanted condition although the DWR is grown under flooded condition; this experiment was conducted under rainfed conditions during T. Aman season. The highest genetic variability was obtained in filled grains/panicle followed by plant height panicles/plant, filled grains/panicle and grains yield had high genetic coefficient of variation and heritability in broad sense coupled with high genetic advance in percentage of mean.

Objectives:

To find out genetic variability, selection criteria and the characters highly responsible for high yield potential in some advanced breeding of rice.

Methodology:

Thirty advanced breeding lines of deep water rice were grown in a randomized complete block design under transplanted condition although the DWR is grown under flooded condition; this experiment was conducted under rainfed conditions during T. Aman season in 1 x 2 m² plots with a spacing of 20 x 20 cm, using two seedling per hill. Fertilizers were applied @ 60:40:40 kg NPK/ha. Control measures for pest, diseases and weed were taken whether necessary. The data were analyzed for genetic variance ( σ2g), environmental variance (σ2e) phenotypic variance(σ2 p), genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), heritability in broad sense (Hb), genetic advance in percentage of mean (GAPM) data, path coefficient. The estimate of GCV and PCV were classified as low, medium and high.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest genetic variability was obtained in filled grains/panicle followed by plant height panicles/plant, filled grains/panicle and grains yield had high genetic coefficient of variation and heritability in broad sense coupled with high genetic advance in percentage of mean. Panicle length, panicles/plant, plant height, filled grains/panicle and harvest index showed significant positive association with grain yield. Path coefficient analysis also revealed maximum positive and direct contribution of filled grain to grain yield followed by panicle/ plant, 1000 grain weight, plant height. Moreover, harvest index had highest indirect effect on grain yield through filled grains/panicle. Flag leaf area, plant height and panicle length also had positive and indirect effect on grain yield through filled grains/panicle.
