Productivity of Different Spice Crops as First and Mungbean as Second Intercrop Under Paired Row Method of Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results of this experiment revealed that no adverse effect of inter cropping was found on tillering, millable canes formation, cane yield and pol% cane. Yields of spices as first inter crop were satisfactory in all treatment combinations but the yields of mungbean grown as second inter crop were higher in T2, T7, T8 and T9 where black cumin, methi, firingi and coriander were cultivated as first inter crop. But it was the highest in the treatment T9 where only mungbean was grown as inter crop. In the treatment T4, T5 and T6, mungbean was not grown due to long vegetation period of the 1st inter crops mouri, radhuni and soluk. The maximum of 154.50 t ha-1 total adjusted cane yield was recorded in the T7 where firingi was grown as first intercrop and it was the minimum (116.53 t ha-1) in the T6 where soluk was grown as 1st inter crop. It may be noted from the results of the experiment that black cumin, methi, firingi and coriander are suitable spice crops to grow as first inter crop and mungbean as second inter crop with sugarcane in paired row.

Objectives:

i). To identify better spices – mungbean combination with sugarcane

ii). To sustain sugarcane cultivation ensuring higher production & income.

iii). To maximize the higher economic return from sugarcane field

iv). To develop production packages for different spices as first inter crops and mungbean as second inter crop with sugarcane

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BSRI farm during 2003-2004 cropping season with a view to screening some spice crops (Black cumin, Fenu greek, Aniseed, Radhuni, Sholuk, Firingi, Onion, Garlic and Coriander) as first and mungbean as second inter crop with paired row cane. The study was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Sugarcane variety Isd 31 was studied in the experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

•The results of this research work will facilitate the farmers in selecting compatible spices crops. •Farmers will earn an extra income through cultivation of suitable spices as inter crops. •Sugarcane based inter cropping system incorporating spices will be disseminated to farmers level based on results of this experiment.
