Shahrasti Among the 30 genotypes, Raichar1 demonstrated the highest grain yield (6.97 t/ha) followed by ACI Hybrid Rice 1 (6.32 t/ha). On the other hand, BR2 yielded the lowest (3.13 t/ha). Grain and straw As conc. were ranged from 0.19 to 0.41 and 0.91 to 2.86 mg/kg, respectively. BRRIdhan35 showed the highest while BRRI dhan27 showed the lowest arsenic concentration in the grain. Bhanga The genotypes tested in Bhanga yielded almost similar to those tested in Shahrasti, although the average grain yield of Shahrasti (6.25 t/ha) was higher than of Bhanga (6.07 t/ha). Among the 22 tested genotypes, BRRI dhan29 produced the highest grain (6.70 t/ha) followed by BR 8 (6.23 t/ha) while BRRI dhan27 demonstrated the lowest yield (2.73 t/ha). As concentration (1.3 mg/kg) found in BRRI dhan45 exceeded the maximum permissible limit. BR7, BR9 and BR15 also showed much high grain As (0.91-0.97 mg/kg) approaching 1 mg/kg. Poranpur Among the 34 genotypes, BRRI Hybrid dhan1 demonstrated the highest grain yield (4.07 t/ha) followed by BR3 and BR9 (3.73 t/ha). On the other hand, BR7323-4B-1 yielded the lowest (1.55 t/ha). Among the varieties. BR14 contained the highest and BRRI dhan28 contained the lowest arsenic in their grain.

To find out genetic variability of Boro rice varieties for yield and As content in rice grain and straw in As contaminated soils of Shahrasti (Hossainpur) of Chandpur district and Bhanga and Poranpur of Faridpur district.

A number of rice genotypes (30 at Shahrasti, 34 at Poranpur and 22 at Bhanga) were tested. Soil background total As at Shahrasti and Bhanga were 4.5 and 13.3 mg/kg, respectively. Concentrations of As in irrigation water were165 µg/l, 160 µg/l and 62µg/l in Shahrasti, Bhanga and Poranpur, respectively. The experimental design was RCB with three replications. 40 days old seedlings were transplanted in 4m2 plots. Fertilizer was applied at a rate of N-P-K-S-Zn@120-20-50-15-2 kg/ha from urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum and zinc oxide. Water samples were collected 10-15 minutes after starting the selected STW. The samples for As analyses were collected through 0.45µm membrane filter and acidified with 2M HCl. Before sampling, bottles were acid washed and rinsed 2-3 times with STW’s water. Initial soil samples (0-15cm depth) from the experimental plots of each site were collected before land preparation. Composite soil samples from the experimental field (15 points- seven from each of the both diagonals and the 15th one from the intersection point of the diagonal) were collected. The soil samples were air dried and sieved. All soil samples (air dried) were analyzed for total As. At maturity, the crop was harvested from the whole plot (4 m2) and grain yield was recorded. Plant and soil samples were dried and processed before digestion in tri-acid mixture for As-analysis. Arsenic was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer with flow-injection hydride generation system.

Bhanga: Among the 22 tested genotypes, BRRI dhan29 produced the highest grain (6.70 t/ha) followed by BR8 (6.23 t/ha) while BRRI dhan27 demonstrated the lowest yield (2.73 t/ha). On the other hand, among the 22 varieties BR9 and BR8 genotypes showed the highest and lowest arsenic concentration in the rice straw, respectively. The average grain As concentration in the genotypes grown in Bhanga (0.72 mg/kg) were higher than those tested in Shahrasti (0.28 mg/kg). This could be due to higher soil As in Bhanga (13.3 mg/kg) compared to Shahrasti (4.5 mg/kg). Poranpur: Among the 34 genotypes, BRRI Hybrid dhan1 demonstrated the highest grain yield (4.07 t/ha) followed by BR3 and BR9 (3.73 t/ha). Grain and straw As conc. were ranged from 0.303 to 0.657 and 0.883 to 6.813 mg/kg, respectively, among the varieties. BR14 contained the highest and BRRI dhan28 contained the lowest arsenic in their grain. On the other hand, BR7009-81-1-2-1 and BR7323-4B-1 varieties accumulated the highest and lowest arsenic in their straw, respectively. The concentrations of grain As in all the genotypes were much below the maximum permissible food limit (1 mg/kg).
