Impact of Brush Shelter on the Production Potentiality of Kaptai Lake

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifteen species of fish with highest (20.73%) calibaus (L. calbasu), followed by boal (W. attu) 14.41%, tilapia (O. niloticus) 8.97% and kajuli, Ailiichthys punctata 8.82% were recorded from the brush shelter of kaptai lake. Siluriformes (36.76%) was the highest abundant group and Synbranchiformes (5.15%) was the less abundant fish group in brush shelter.

Objectives:

A. Impact assessment of the brush shelter fishing method; to know the abundance of different fish species in brush shelter;

B. To know the species composition that are captured from the brush shelter; to determine the extent of juvenile abundance in brush shelter;

C. To evaluate the impact of brush shelter on the breeding performance of brood fish.

Methodology:

Selected brush shelters were established in Langadu, Barkol and Rangamati Sadar upazilla of Kaptai lake. Brush shelter was prepared by two types of materials; materials for shed and materials for shelter of fishes. Floating aquatic weeds were used for shed of fishes and branches and roots of different trees were used for shelter of fishes. Long bamboos and nylon ropes were used to encircle and fix aquatic weeds, branches and roots of different trees.Feed like wheat bran, rice bran, mustard oil cake, and fermented rice were administered periodically. Attractants like Methi, akangi, fish call powder/lure were used to attract fish before harvesting. Seine net (Juk jal) and oxygen musk were used for harvesting. Before harvesting total area of brush shelter were encircled with a large seine net up to bottom. Then they clear the brushes from the encircled area. Harvesting starts by a cast net to catch large size fishes. Species composition was recorded according to the group and order of fish and prawn during the period of harvesting. Percentage composition of different groups of fish and prawn was estimated from the harvested brush shelter.

Achievement/Findings:

Impact of brush shelter on the production potentiality of Kaptai lake was assessed through establishment of brush shelter in selected locations. From the present study it was found that species like calbasu, boal, kajuli, tengra, pabda and shol were most abundant fishes in brush shelter and species like ruhu, catla, chital were less abundant. Breeding performance of different fish species in brush shelter could be identify from the present study.
