Evaluation of Different Rat Control Techniques in Poultry Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Shreepur Upazila in Gazipur district to evaluate the different rat control techniques against rodents in poultry farm. Highest (81.99%) reduction of rat population was recorded in 'Lanirat' treated farm and lowest (51.13%) in 'Trap' setting farm. Only three species of small mammals were found in poultry farm. These are Bandicota bengalensis (88.46%), Mus musculus (1.28%) and Suncus murinus (10.26%). Over all sex ratio was 100:52.17. Only 28.26% females were found in active reproductive condition.

Objectives:

To find out the best rat control method, which will be preferable to the poultry farmers.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Shreepur Upazila in Gazipur, during October 2002 to April 2003. Twelve poultry farms were randomly selected. The selected farms were more or less similar in size. Four treatments viz. trapping, zinc phosphide baiting, lanirat baiting and an untreated control where no control techniques were applied. For each treatment three farms were selected. The pre and post-treatments rodent population index was taken by using tracking tiles. Tile index were taken for two nights for both pre and post treatment operation. In the "Trap farm", animals were captured with metal "kill trap". Twenty traps were used per night for each farm and the trapping continued for four nights. Each of the captured specimens was weighed, measured and autopsied for getting reproductive. In the case of male rat, testis condition and its lengths were recorded. The animals that had fully descended testis were treated as an adult male while for the female that had perforated vagina were treated as an adult. For both zinc phosphide and Lanirat treated farm, 10g bait was placed at each of the 20 bait points per night. The baits were placed near the burrowon a piece of paper. Baiting continued up for 4 days. The poison bait consumption was recorded every morning with a balance. The efficacy of different rat control techniques was evaluated on the basis of pre and post treatments tile index.

Achievement/Findings:

Zinc phosphide and lanirat showed significant reduction in rodent number in the poultry farm than the untreated control. The highest reduction in rodent number was observed in Lanirat treated farm and the lowest reduction was observed in "trap" farm. In the control treatment, rodent number actually increased (33.44%) than the pre-treatment population. Population reduction in the trapping, zinc phosphide and lanirat treated farm were 51.13%, 67.89% and 81.99% respectively. The mean consumption of lanirat bait was 145.33 g per night per farm where as zinc phosphide bait consumption was 67.89 g per night per farm . From the poultry farm, only three species of small mammals were captured by kill trap. They were Bandicota bengalensis, Mus musculus and one species of shrew (Suncus murinus). Out of 78 total animals, 69 (88.46%) were Bandicota bengalensis, 1(1.28%) was Mus musculus and 8 (10.26%) were Suncus murinus (Fig 13). no Rattus rattus was captured. Out of 70 rats 46 (65.71%) were female and 24 (34.29%) were male rats. Sex ratio (F:M) was 100:52.17. Number of adult rats (72.86%) was higher than the juvenile (27.14%) rats.
