Nutritional Quality of Mulberry Leaves Raised Under Different Forms of Cultivation.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The nutritional quality of mulberry leaves raised under three different forms of cultivation were evaluated. The nutritional components of the leaves obtained from bush, low cut and tree were found to be significantly different from one another with respect to both quality and quantity. Leaves harvested from tree were relatively rich in protein, starch, soluble carbohydrate and crude fiber contents, whereas those harvested from bush and low cut were poor in these components but rich in moisture and mineral contents. Seasonal effects were also found to be highly significant on the quality and quantity of nutrient. Suggestion has been made to feed leaves from bush and low cut to early stages and tree leaves to late stages of larval rearing in silkworm for better cocoon crop production.

Objectives:

To analyze and evaluate the nutritional quality of mulberry leaves raised under different forms of cultivation in different seasons.

Methodology:

Mulberry variety MV-5 was grown in three forms viz. bush, low cut and tree on sandy clay loam soil at the Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute, Rajshahi, in 1984 and was used for the present study. Identical agronomical practices were adopted as and when needed. Leaf samples were collected four times: (a) 3rd week of February (Si), (b) May (82), (c) August (83), and (d) November (84) of 1986. The samples were weighed, dried in an oven at 80^C until constant weight was obtained and moisture content was determined. The dried leaves were powered and stored for chemical analysis. The nutrient quality of the leaves were assessed by estimating protein, mineral, total sugar, reducing sugar, starch, soluble carbohydrate and crude fiber contents according to the procedures of AOAC (1980).
