Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BARI developed pedal grain cleaner and power grain cleaner was tested in Farm Machinery and Post harvest Process Engineering Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Gazipur during 2003-5. The winnower was tested with paddy and capacity of pedal and power winnowers were 406 kg/h and 808 kg/h, respectively. The average cleaning efficiencies for pedal and power winnower are 97 percent and 93 percent, respectively. The operating cost of pedal and power winnower are take and 15 taka per. hour, respectively.

Objectives:

Testing and performance evaluation of pedal and power operated winnower for cleaning rice and wheat

Methodology:

Specification of the cleaner: The outside dimension of the machine is 120 cm in length, 70 cm width and 134 cm height. The main structure of the machine is made of angle bar. The blower is made of 22 gauge galvanized iron sheet .Radial flow blower-blade is used for easier construction and trouble-free operation in dirty air. The sieve is 32 cm long and 44 cm wide. A provision is made for replacing sieve of varying sizes depending on grain size. The blower is pedal-operated and runs between 450 to 500 rpm against the pedal speed of 45 to 55rpm. The speed is accelerated or decelerated with the used attached intermediate belt-pulley mechanism. The unit is designed to be operated by one-man power.The air velocity must be less than 8 m/s to allow the downward fall of grain. The airflow can be controlled at the inlet of the blower. Adjustment before operations: Before operating the machine, certain adjustment are necessary (by trial) for cleaning a particular type of seeds. Bearings and other rotating parts should be properly lubricated to minimize friction and for smooth operation. Proper size of sieve should be selected and fitted in the sieve block. The adjustments should ensure thorough cleaning of grains. The feed rate in controlled by adjusting the hopper shutter and the rate of cleaning per unit of time should be controlled by adjusting the sieve inclinations. The air-flow rate should be controlled by adjusting the inlet opening of the blower.

Achievement/Findings:

The average capacity of pedal and power winnower was 406 kg/h and 808 kg/h, respectively. The average cleaning efficiency for pedal and power winnower is 97 percent and 93 percent, respectively. The operating cost of pedal and power winnower are 22 Taka and 15 Taka per hour, respectively. Loss is 1 percent in winnower compared to 6 percent that of traditional system. This technology recommended for transfer to the end users through propaganda and extension people.
