The study was conducted in Atghoria, Pabna under AEZ-11 and 12 during 2003-2006 to determine the changes in soil fertility status, land use and inundation land types as well as the present status of the soils. A soil survey was carried out and chemical analysis for plant nutrients in soils was done. Significant changes were found in land types, land use practices and fertility status of the soils as compared to 1990. Phosphorus and zinc were predominantly declined. Nitrogen was decreased in most cases. Potassium was found increased in medium lowland (MLL) and very low land (VLL); decreased in highland (HL); and not changed in medium high land (MHL). Organic matter and boron were fond increased. Soil pH was increased to 7.8, 7.4, 7.9 from 7.4, 7.2, 7.2 respectively for HL, MHL and VLL soils; whereas it was decreased in MLL and LL soils. Triple cropped and year-round cropped areas were significantly increased. MHL and MLL soils were increased by 6.4 and 5.1% respectively. Deficiencies of nitrogen, phosphorus, and zinc were observed everywhere and potassium and zinc were deficient in some places. Soils were slightly alkaline.

To determine the changes in soil fertility status, agricultural land use and inundation land type as well as the present status of the soils of Atghoria, Pabna under the agroecological regions of the Ganges River Floodplain (AEZ-11 and 12) of Bangladesh.

Soil survey was carried out according to methods following techniques as established by Soil Survey Stuff of SRDI, Bangladesh. Recent aerial photos (1:50,000) and previous Soil and Landform Map (1: 50,000) and a draft field map were used as base materials to conduct the survey. Soil samples were collected by taking at least one from each 200 hectares of land. Appropriate soil sample collection techniques were followed. A total of ninety (90) soil samples were collected from top soil layers (0-20cm depending on tillage instrument) throughout the upazila. The samples were than air dried, processed, tagged and sent to regional laboratory, SRDI, Rajshahi for analysis. Laboratory data for organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, zinc and pH were considered for fertility change analysis. Inundation land types were determined by flooding depth of the land asking farmers through questionnaire methods and observing physical features. Land use practices were also noted down during field survey. Upazila Land and Soil Resources Utilization Guide of the same administrative and soil boundaries that first published in 1990 by the same organization was taken for the change study of soil fertility.

Significant changes were found in inundation land types, land use practices and fertility status of the soils in selected Atghoria upazila under Pabna district falling in AEZ-11 and 12 in 2006 as compared to 1990. Phosphorus and zinc were predominantly declined over the study period. Nitrogen was decreased in most cases throughout the upazila. Overall decreased flooding depths have made opportunity to grow more crops by the farmers. Deficiencies of nitrogen, phosphorus, and zinc were observed everywhere and potassium and zinc were deficient in some places. Soils were slightly alkaline. Published Upazila Land and Soil Resources Utilization Guide can be used as an important tool for agricultural production plan and fertilizer application at the local level. Use of organic manures and growing legume crops are highly appreciated to maintain organic matter component of the soils.
