Evaluation of Pest Tolerance of the Crossed Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at cotton Research Center Rangpur during the season 2011-2012. One back crossed genotypes, four introduce lines and one local control were included in this experiment. The tested heterozygous genotypes showed significant different in all yield attributing traits except node number of first fruiting branches per plant Except BC5 and CB-10 all other genotypes showed tolerance to American boll warm but susceptible to sucking pest.

Objectives:

The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of back cross genotype with local control and introduced hybrids against major cotton pest.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center Rangpur during the season 2011-2012. - One back crossed genotypes BC5, four introduce lines PA-1,PA-2,CT-042,CT-043 and one local control CB-10 were included in this experiment. Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications was followed. The unit plot size was 10m × 3.6m (4 rows). The plant spacing was .90m × 0.45m. Two or three seeds were sown per hole during sowing time but at the final thinning (after 21 days of seed emergence) one seedling per stand were allowed. Presence of Chewing and sucking pest were monitored in regular interval and scouting based spray was followed.

Achievement/Findings:

Mean performance of the introduced genotypes for yield and yield attributes such as. vegetative branches per plant, primary fruiting branches per plant, secondary fruiting branches per plant, days to first flowering day to 1st boll split, plant height, number of boll per plant, single boll weight and seed cotton yield showed significantly different results. Similar results were found in node number of first fruiting branch. The highest number of bolls was recorded in PA-2 (48.33) and its boll weight was medium. The highest amount of seed cotton was produced by PA-2 (2829 kg/ha) which was followed by CT-043 (2787 kg/ha) and PA-1(2645 kg/ha). The highest GOT% and lint production was found in CT-042. All the treatments showed significant different for pest incidence. For jassid incident higher amount of jassid was found in CB-10 where as the lowest in PA-2 (1.3 nymph). From table 2(a), it was observed that the treatment CB-10 was susceptible to aphid, jassid, white fly, leaf roller, spotted boll warm and American boll warm. Other parents were also susceptible to sucking pest but tolerant to chewing pest. One crossed genotypes showed susceptible against all sucking pest like aphid, jassid, white fly, leaf roller and boll warm etc. The introduced four cotton varieties were susceptible to sucking pest but tolerant to chewing pest.
