Varietals Selection of Cip Germplasm with the Mother & Baby Trial Design in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifteen CIP germplasm, two TCRC improved potato varieties Diamant and Cardinal were evaluated at Dianjpur&Debigonj during 2011-12 for their characterization of growth, yield and postharvest performance suitability. At growth stage CIP-126 ranked first in both the locations. At harvest stage CIP-126 was best selected clone by farmers for both mother & baby trial at Dinajpurwihile CIP-112 for mother and LB-12 for baby trial have been selected. The yield performance of CIP-126 was the highest (58.96 t/ha) at Dinajpur and LB-14 (69.34 t/ha) at Debigonj mother trial. At post-harvest stage CIP-126 was the best clone for good storage ability among all.

Objectives:

Selection of superior genotypes for variety development with the participation of farmers and other stakeholders.

Methodology:

The team Mother and Baby comprising of CIP staff and resource person was formed to carry out the evaluation at the time of flowering, harvesting and post-harvest stages. The mother trials were taken on the field of BRAC seed farm, Birol, Dinajpur and BSPC farm, BARI, Debigoonj, Panchagarh in 2011-12 crop season. Baby trials were taken at farmers’ fields in the districts of Dinajpur and Panchgarh adjacent to these farms. Participatory approaches included not only farmers but also the other actors in relevant production-utilization-marketing chains. Fifteen CIP clones were selected from two groups (biotic &abotic tolerance) based on growth, yield and storage performance; viz. for biotic tolerance virus group CIP- 2 (CIP 391846.5), CIP-14 (CIP 397079.6)& CIP-10 (CIP 397029.21); Late Blight group LB-1 (391004.18), LB-2 (391046.14), LB-12 (396031.119) & LB-14 (396244.12); abiotic tolerance group CIP- 139 (396311.1), CIP- 131 (393708.31), CIP- 126 (392797.22), CIP-120 (389429.31), CIP-118 (388615.22), CIP- 117 (386292.3) & CIP-112 (380606.6) where Diamant and Cardinal used as checked. Fertilizers were applied @ 325-220-250-120 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. Full amount of TSP, MP and Gypsum and 50% of urea were applied as basal and the remaining amount of urea was side dressed at 35 DAP. Weeding, fungicide spraying and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crops were dehaulmed at 90 DAP. Data on different growth and yield contributing characters were recorded and statistically analyzed. The details of the experiments are shown below (Table-1.80) Table 1.80. At the time of flowering (vegetative development), selection criteria for vegetative growth are evaluated by participatory evaluation method and the farmers’ opinions about the desired and true status of the clones was carried out. At the time of harvest, the following evaluations were performed: a standard evaluation of yield, a participatory selection of the clones, and an organoleptic evaluation. After the harvest, a participatory evaluation of the characteristics for storage behavior of the clones was done. The participation of the key players in the potato chain (farmers, merchants, consumers) is encouraged. The methods to be applied in the evaluation of each phase (flowering, harvest, and post-harvest) were explained and the forms for data registration are presented. Two different types of seeds have been provided to them for segregated male or female. Six seeds were given an individual for voting. Among them three seed for first priority vote, two for second and third for one seed farmers putted for each criterion. Only three criteria they had to choose in all phases. So far the evaluation has been done for the three stages vegetative (flowering) stage, harvesting stage and the third period post-harvest. The vegetative (flowering) stage evaluation was done during January, 2012 when the potato crop was in vegetative stage. Harvesting stage with organoleptic test evaluation was done during February/March, 2012 and post harvesting stage evaluation of potato clones was carried out in May/June, 2012.
