Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Lalmonirhat Military farm occupies an area of 259.4 ha. Land types were classified as High land,moderately well drained; high land, imperfectly drained; and medium high land, poorly drained. Land capability classes were Good agricultural land, Moderate agricultural land and Poor agricultural land. Soil, land type and land capability map were made. Fertilizer recommendation were made for fodders on the basis of soil test results.

Methodology:

The method of survey was based on high intensity survey i.e. detailed soil survey following USDA Survey Manual. Aerial photographs of scale 1: 50,000 (1983) enlarged to a scale of 1: 20,000 by SPARRSO was used as base material. Mouza map, RSS Report of Kurigram and Gaibandha district of SRDI was also used as base material. Grid of one square centemeter was drawn on the interpretative soil map covering an area of 1 ha and soils were examined at an interval of 100 meter following the grid. Soils were examined and described in detail from small pits dug and auger borings at every observation points. Boundaries between the recognized soil series were checked throughout their extent to map them at soil type and phase level. The profiles of the identified soils were described in the dug pits of standard size at representative sites and soil samples were taken for physical and chemical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Lalmonirhat Military Farm is mostly covered by a relatively smooth, broad, nearly level to very gently undulating landscape of floodplain ridges and inter-ridge depressions. The soils are mostly medium to acidic in reaction. About 73% of the land is above normal flood level i.e high land and about 27% are medium high land.In total, six soil series namely Dimla, Domar, Pirgachha, Bonarpara, Gangachara and Farabari which have been developed in Tista alluvium has been recognized.These have been mapped into 8 soil mapping units. Land type map comprises of 3 mapping units: high land, well drained (50%); high land, moderately well drained (11%)and medium high land, poorly drained (27%). Land capability map were comprises of 3 mapping units: Good agricultural land (58%); Moderate agricultural land (28%)and Poor agricultural land (0.89%). The soils of the farm were strongly acidic to medium acidic. Organic matter being low to medium. Available N, P, S were below critical level while K were low to medium.Fertilizer recommendations for fodder were made based on soil test value.
