Detailed Soil Survey of BINA Sub-station, Rangpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The farm lies approximately between 25o43'17" and 25o43'30" north latitude and 89o16'44" and 89o17'01" east longitude covering an area of about 3.78 ha. The area lies in the physiographic unit of Tista Meander Floodplain.Three soil series namely Pirgachha, Jamun and Gangachara and one madeland were identified which are developed on Tista alluvium. Two land namely high land and medium high were recognized.Crop suitability assessment was made to suggest suitable crops and cropping patterns. Soil fertility were assessed on the basis of soil test results and fertilizer recommendation was made.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The Soil Survey Team physically surveyed the farm and office area of the BINA Sub-Station, Rangpur and delineated the boundary of research plots, roads and buildings etc. on Mauza map (1: 16 miles). RSS Report of Nilphamari and Sadar subdivisions, Rangpur district, Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide, Rangpur Sadar Upazila and a non-scale schematic map served by BINA authority was used as base materials. The survey involved detailed field observations of soil, topography and other environmental aspects and collection of representative soil samples for physical and chemical analysis. The whole area was divided into small plots by drawing grid lines over the map in two way direction. Soils were checked by following a traverse line drawn 30 meter apart. Small pegs were set on each meeting point and soils were investigated by digging small pits.Identified soil series were described thoroughly in standard size pits dug at representative sites. Layerwise samples and composite topsoil samples were collected for laboratory analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The farm area comprise of a relatively smooth, broad and nearly level landscape. The entire area is underlain by recent and sub-recent alluvium, which have been deposited under meandering condition within last 1000 years. The soils are silt loam in texture, strongly acidic to slightly acidic in reaction in topsoil. About 45% of the area is high land and about 36% medium highland. Ground water table comes up with in 0.5 meter depth in the rainy season and goes down below 3 meter depth in dry season. The area were divided into seven soil mapping units, three land capability units and two land type units. Crop suitability ratings were done to identify suitable, moderately suitable and non suitable crops. Soil test results were interpreted to determine the status of nutrients in the soil for fertilizer recommendations.
