The effectiveness of geo-jute (untreated)to rehabilitate degraded lands and stabilize landslide area was tested at SCWMC, Bandarban and proved to be an appropriate low cost technology for controlling soil erosion and landslide in Hilly areas.

1. To demonstrate the effectiveness of geo-jute (untreated) for rehabilitating degraded lands of farmer's field.

2. To create awareness among the hill dwellers about the technique of quick rejuvenation of degraded land.

A site of about 308 square meter eroded land was selected at the west side of Bandarban-Keranihat road nearer to Parjatan Motel at Meghla in Bandarban Sadar Upazila owned by Mr Md. Mostafizur Rahman. The whole eroded area covered with geo-jute and 250 live pegs were used to fix the jute mat firmly with the soil. The species used as live pegs were Mandar (Erythrina roberosa), Sajna (Moringa oleifera), Glericidia (Gleridia sp.) and Cafula (Linea coromandilika).

In hilly areas most of the roads were constructed by cutting hills. These exposed sloping lands are mostly steep and susceptible to landslide in every monsoon resulting in road blocks, clogging of drainage channels in the downstream.A substantial budget is required every year to stabilize the road side exposed hills.Geo-jute mat was fixed to the selected eroded area with live pegs. Among the live pegs Mandar, Sajna and Glericidia was established earlier than Cafula. Jute strands acted as miniature dams which entrap displaced soil particles and reduces soil loss by surface run-off. At the end of moonsoon season the whole field was covered by established plants. This low cost technology will help reduce soil erosion in sloping lands and stabilize landslide area.
