The field experiment was conducted at Joydebpur, Ishurdi and Jessore. The variety BARI Chola-5 and the rhizobial inoculum (Rhizobium strain RCa-220) in 1999-2000, and Rhizobium strain RCa-IC-59 in 2000-2001 and strain RCa-IC-59 at Joydebpur and RCa-220 at Jessore in 2000-2001 were used. The experiment was designed in RCBD. There were six treatments (T1:NPKSZn, T2:PKSZn+Inoculum, T3:CD+½PKSZn+Inoculum, T4:CD+½PKSZn, T5:Inoculum, T6:Control) in 1999-2000 and five treatments (T1:NPKSZn, T2:PKSZn+Inoculum, T3: PKSZn, T4: Inoculum and T5:Control) in 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. Rhizobial inoculum and chemical fertilizers were used @ 1.5kg Inoculum ha-1, 5t CD ha-1, 50kg N, 22kg P, 42kg K, 20kg S and 5kg Zn ha-1 in 1999-2000 and @ 1.5kg Inoculum ha-1, 50kg N, 22kg P, 42kg K, 20kg S and 5kg Zn ha-1 in 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. Inoculated plants gave significantly higher nodule number and weight. Plant receiving inoculum along with cowdung and half PKSZn fertilization recorded higher nodule number and weight in 1999-2000. Plants receiving same treatment produced highest grain yield at Joydebpur and Ishurdi in 1999-2000. Inoculated plants along with all recommended fertilizers without added nitrogen fertilizer produced highest grain yield at Joydebpur and Ishurdi in 2000-2001. The same treatment also higher seed yield at Joydebpur and Jessore in 2001-2002.

The field experiment was conducted at BARI Central Farm, Joydebpur and RARI, Ishurdi during rabi season of 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 and at BARI Central Farm, Joydebpur and RARS, Jessore during 2001-2002 with the objectives to find out the efficiency of bacterial inoculum and to estimate the contribution of fertilizer for chickpea. The variety BARI Chola-5 and the rhizobial inoculum (Rhizobium strain RCa-220) both at Joydebpur and Ishirdi in 1999-2000, and Rhizobium strain RCa-IC-59 both at Joydebpur and Ishurdi in 2000-2001, and Rhizobium strain RCa-IC-59 at Joydebpur and RCa-220 at Jessore in 2000-2001 were used in these experiments. The experiment was designed in RCBD having 4 replications in each treatment. Unit plot size was 6 m x 4 m in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, 4 m x 3 m in 2001-2002. There were six treatments (T1: NPKSZn, T2: PKSZn + Inoculum, T3: CD + ½ PKSZn + Inoculum, T4: CD + ½ PKSZn, T5: Inoculum, T6: Control) in 1999-2000 and five treatments (T1: NPKSZn, T2: PKSZn + Inoculum, T3: PKSZn, T4: Inoculum and T5: Control) in 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. Where relevant, the above rhizobial inoculum and chemical fertilizers were used @ 1.5 kg Inoculum ha-1, 5 t CD ha-1, 50 kg N ha-1 from urea, 22 kg P ha-1 from TSP, 42 kg K ha-1 from MP, 20 kg S ha-1 from gypsum and 5 kg Zn ha-1 in 1999-2000 and @ 1.5 kg Inoculum ha-1, 50 kg N ha-1 from urea, 22 kg P ha-1 from TSP, 42 kg K ha-1 from MP, 20 kg S ha-1 from gypsum and 5 kg Zn ha-1 in 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. Zinc was not applied at Joydebpur. The crop was harvested on last week of March 30 to second week of April. Dry weight of seed and stover from each unit plot was recorded.

Inoculated plants gave significantly higher nodule number and nodule weight compared to other treatments without inoculum. Plant receiving inoculum along with phosphorus, potash, sulphur and zinc fertilization recorded higher nodule number of 338/10 plants at Joydebpur which was statistically higher over other treatments and 242/10 plants at Jessore, which was statistically similar to only inoculim treatment. In case of nodule weight P K S Zn plus inoculum produced statistically higher weighty nodule of 1055 mg/10 plants at Joydebpur and 1600 mg/10 plants at Jessore. Similarly, inoculated plants along with all recommended fertilizers without added nitrogen fertilizer produced highest seed yield of 1.62 t/ha (56% higher over control and statistically similar to N P K S Zn treated plants) at Joydebpur and 1.86 t/ha (37% higher over control) at Jessore. The results are in agreements with the results of Eusuf Zai et al. (1999a and 1999b), Bhuiyan et al. (2001 and 1996), Khanam et al. (1999 and 1994), Rahman et al. (1994), Raut and Kohire (1991) who worked on chickpea, lentil and mungbean.
