A field experiment on rhizobial inoculation on different lentil varieties was conducted at the three RARS of Ishurdi, Jessore and Rahmatpur and Gazipur for 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. Four lentil varieties viz. BARI Mashur-1, BARI Mashur-2, BARI Mashur-3 and BARI Mashur-4 were studied with and without rhizobial inoculation in RCBD with four replications. Fertilizers were used @ 22-42-20-5 kg PKSZn ha-1 as basal. Peat based rhizobial inoculum was used @ 1.5 kg ha-1 as seed inoculant. Rhizobial inoculation significantly increased nodulation, seed and stover yield. In 2002-2003, BARI Masur-2 along with and without inoculum produced higher seed yield at all the locations and BARI Masur-3 at Jessore. Three varieties i.e. BARI Masur-2, BARI Masur-3 and BARI Masur-4 along with Rhizobium inoculation performed better at Joydebpur. In 2003-2004, BARI Mashur-2, and BARI Mashur-3 were found better at Ishurdi, BARI Mashur-3 at Jessore and BARI Mashur-1, BARI Mashur-2 and BARI Mashur-3 performed identically superior to BARI Mashur-4 at Rahmatpur.

To observe the response of different lentil varieties to inoculation with an elite strain of Rhizobium under different agro-ecological situation

The experiment was conducted at four locations of RARS, Ishurdi, Jessore and Rahmatpur, Barisal and at the Central Research Station of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur for two consecutive years during rabi season 2002-03 and 2003-04. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with four replications at all the locations in both the years. Four lentil varieties viz. BARI mashur-1, BARI mashur-2, BARI mashur-3 and BARI mashur-4 were studied with and without rhizobial inoculation. Peat based rhizobial inoculum (Rhizobium strain RLc-140) was used at the rate of 1.5 kg/ha. Lentil seeds were mixed thoroughly with the inoculum before sowing. Fertilizers were used at the rate of 22-42-20-5 kg PKSZn/ha as basal. Triple super-phosphate, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate were used as the sources of P, K, S and Zinc, respectively. The unit plots measured 3m × 4m. The crop was sown during the second week of November at Jessore and third week of November at Ishurdi and Rahmatpur, Barisal. Seeds were used at the rate of 35 kg/ha. Weeding, thinning and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Nodules were collected by carefully uprooting five sample plants selected randomly from each unit plot at the 50 percent flowering stage. Nodules were separated from the roots, counted and then oven-dried and weighed. Data on yield and yield components were recorded at maturity. The crop was harvested during the First week of March at Jessore and Ishurdi and third week of March at Rahmatpur, Barisal. It is to be mentioned that the experiment at Joydebpur was damaged by unusual rain in the second year. Data were analyzed by using the statistical package MSTATC.

Effect of inoculation Rhizobial inoculation significantly increased both seed and stover yields. The yield components were also positively influenced by rhizobial inoculation though the increase was not significant for all the yield components. Effect of variety Both seed and stover yield of lentil varieties were found significantly different. BARI mashur-2 and BARI mashur-3 produced identically superior seed and stover yields at Ishurdi. At Jessore BARI mashur-3 produced significantly higher seed yield. At Rahmatpur, seed yield of BARI mashur-1, BARI mashur-2 and BARI mashur-3 was found identical and superior to BARI mashur-4. Nodule weight of BARI mashur-3 was significantly higher than other varieties at Ishurdi and Jessore but in Rahmatpur, BARI mashur-1 produced significantly higher nodule weight. Nodule biomass appeared to influence the seed yield of lentil. Interaction Effect of Inoculation and Variety Interaction effect of nodulation and variety on the yield, yield components and on nodulation of lentil was not significant. This indicates that rhizobial inoculation is equally effective to all the lentil varieties studied. Economics and Environmental Issues Use of rhizobial biofertilizer can supplement 50 kg N/ha, which costs about Tk. 600.00/ha. Rate of application of biofertilizer is 1.5 kg/ha, the price of which is Tk. 100.00/ha. This indicates that supplementing the use of N from chemical fertilizer with biofertilizer saves about Tk. 500.00/ha. Besides, biofertilizer is environment friendly and free from adverse effect on the environment. It is evident that rhizobial inoculation significantly increased seed yield of lentil irrespective of variety and location. BARI mashur-2 and BARI mashur-3 were found to perform better at Ishurdi, BARI mashur-3 at Jessore and BARI mashur-1, BARI mashur-2 and BARI mashur-3 equally superior at Rahmatpur, Barisal. These varieties might be grown in the respective areas with rhizobial inoculation.
