Seed Quality and Field Performance of Mustard Seeds Produced from Different Harvesting Stages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2011-12 to evaluate seed quality and field performance of mustard seeds obtained from different harvesting stages for fitting in mustard boro cropping pattern. Seeds of BARI Sarisha-9 and BARI sarisha-14 collected from pale yellow (cut at 75 DAE), golden yellow (cut at 79 DAE) and maturity stage (cut at 83 DAE) constituted the treatment variables. Seeds produced from mature stage or golden yellow pod stage showed higher germination percentage and oil content. Moisture content in mustard seeds was more at early harvesting. Seeds obtained from mature or golden yellow pod stage showed longer root and shoot length and also higher vigour index. Variety and harvesting time did not show any significant influence on seed yield. The result revealed that seed from golden yellow pod stage of BARI Sarisha-9 and BARI Sarisha-14 might be used for mustard-boro crop sequence cultivation without significant reduction in seed yield and quality.

Objectives:

To evaluate seed quality and field performance of mustard seeds obtained from different harvesting stages for fitting in Mustard-Boro cropping pattern.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI Joydebpur Gazipur during rabi season of 2011-12. Seeds of BARI Sarisha-9 and BARI Sarisha-14 collected from pale yellow (cut at 75 DAE), golden yellow (cut at 79 DAE) and maturity stage (cut at 83 DAE) constituted the treatment variables. Germination (%), oil content (%) and moisture content (%) of seeds were tested in laboratory prior to sowing. Seed vigour index was calculated according to Joyraj and Karivaratharaju (1992). The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m. The seeds were sown in lines on 15 November, 2011 with a row spacing of 30 cm. The crops were fertilized @ 55-15-35-10-1-1 kg/ha of NPKSZnB, respectively (FRG, 2005). Half of N and full doses of other fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. A light irrigation was given to the crop for uniform emergence At 3 leaf stage the crop was thinned to maintain plant to plant spacing of 5 cm. The remaining half of N was top dressed at 25 days after emergence (DAE) followed by irrigation. Admire 200SL @ 1 ml/litre of water was sprayed at 15 and 30 DAE to control Jessids. Harvesting was done at maturity stage of respective varieties. At harvesting time five plants were collected randomly from each plot to record the data on number of siliquae/plant, seeds/siliqua and 1000-seed weight. Seed yield was taken from whole plot. Collected data were analyzed statistically and means were adjudged by LSD test at 5% level of significance.
