Comparative Study of the Effect of Different Activators on Composting

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A comparative study on composting was conducted in net house of Soil Science Division during 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. Composting is a process that uses microbial activity to decompose raw organic materials into a relatively stable end product, reduced in quantity and free from offensive odors. Total time required to finish the composting depends upon several factors and the nature of raw materials is one of the main influencing factors. Materials with high C:N ratio takes longer period to complete the decomposition process. Several activators were used to enhance the process. It was observed that fungal activator of Trichoderma has significant effect on time required composting materials with high C:N ratio.

Objectives:

1.To find out suitable activator for composting of raw materials with high C:N ratio

2. To determine the contents of the available nutrients of compost products.

Methodology:

The experiment was initiated on October 23, 2003 at Joydebpur. A permanent structure has been constructed with RCC and brick wall in the campus of Soil Science Division There are 10 composting bins and dimension of the individual composting bin is 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 1 m. Each bin has good drainage system with stopper to block the flow of compost liter. The entire area is covered with corrugated steel sheet to protect the compost from rain and other adverse situation. The experiment was designed in RCB having 3 replications in each treatment. There were three treatments comprising application of urea @ 2% w/w (T1), application fungal activator Trichoderma (T2) and control (T3) having three replications. Fungal activator Trichoderma was grown in PDA media. The raw materials were cut into pieces and were mixed with water and activators properly. The temperature was recorded from the pit and materials were turned on 4th day of compost initiation and every 7th days.

Achievement/Findings:

Fungal activator Trichoderma has significant effect on time taking composting. From the observation of the experimental experience the C:N ratio of the total pool of the raw materials is found to be balanced to 32.88 which has favoured the microbial activation. The forced aeration along with fungal activator with a effective low cost substrate of activator in a windrow method of composting may be the next step of rapid composting research for finding out a package for commercial profitable compost production.
