Assessment of Marine Pollution of the Near Shore Water Along the Coxs Bazar and Chittagong Coasts of the Bay of Bengal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The water and soil samples were collected from the three sampling stations in Cox’s Bazar, one from Moheskhali channel, one from Kolatoli hatchery zone and another one from Teknaf land port. The parameters studied were Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), oil and grease content and heavy metals (Lead, Cadmium, Chromium and Mercury). In these three stations, TDS were 21,600 mg/l, 22,600 mg/l and 4,650 mg/l, respectively in monsoon season and those were found to be 21,425 mg/l, 23,660 mg/l and 5,835 mg/l, respectively in winter season. The oil and grease estimates of the three stations were 20 mg/l, 05 mg/l, and 70 mg/l, respectively in monsoon season and those were found to be 200 mg/l, 40 mg/l, and 270 mg/l, respectively in winter season. All parameters were found higher in winter season than that of in monsoon and pre-monsoon season.

Objectives:

Generate baseline data on the oil and grease and heavy metal and also heavy metal in fish characteristics of Bay of Bengal in the Cox's Bazar and their impact on the aquatic life; find out the load of pollution being mixed with seawater from Bakkhali River, Naf River, Karnafuli river; Determine a pollution index of the coastal water of Cox's Bazar and Chittagong; record fish species biodiversity; and investigate the sources of pollution.

Methodology:

The pollution study was conducted to determine the water and soil quality, oil and grease, and heavy metals in fish/shrimp samples of Cox’s Bazar coast. Three sampling stations as Moheskhali channel, Kolatoli hatchery zone and Teknaf land port were selected for winter, pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. The water quality viz. Oxygen, salinity, TDS, TSS, COD, BOD, oil and grease, and heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cr, Hg and Cd) were analysed following the standard methods.

Achievement/Findings:

The information provided a baseline of the status of oil and grease and heavy metal characteristics of the Cox's Bazar and Chittagong coast. This will be helpful to find out cause of any sudden change in the ecology of the coast; the research work also provided information for the availability of plankton, which may be useful for feeding larvae of fish/shrimp; the impact of effluents released from the shrimp seed production hatcheries on the coastal environment was assessed from the findings of the study; and load of pollution released into the sea water from different rivers adjacent to the coast of Cox's Bazar and Chittagong would be ascertained through this study.
