Detailed Soil Survey of BINA Sub-station, Jamalpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The soils are developed in Old Brahmaputra Floodplain which is deposited over Madhupur Clay.Only Jamalpur soil series has been recognized which has been mapped into 4 mapping units.The soil mapping units are based on soil series and phases.Jamapur normal, very shallow and disturbed phase occupy upper part of the ridge while Jamalpur medium highland phase occur on the lower part of the ridge. The area was mapped into 2 land type units and 2 land capability units. The soils are mainly acidic. The soils are low in N, P and K. The soils of the area are Inceptisols.

Objectives:

To increase the efficiency of planning experimental programs and thereby minimize the errors of different experiments.

Methodology:

BINA authority served a diagrammatic map of the sub-station. Along with the supplied map RSS report of Jamalpur district, Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide of Jamalpur were used as base materials. First a preliminary field visit was made to collect overall information regarding situation, landform, cropping pattern, etc. Then the soil survey was carried out on the basis of field observations of soil, topography and other environmental characteristics. The surveyor divided the whole farm area into small plots by using gridlines over the field survey map. Eight traverse lines in East-West direction and 4 traverse lines in North-South direction were made. Each line was about 30 m apart Small pegs were set on each points where traverse lines dissected one another. Small pits were opened at these points with the help of spade and auger. The soils were examined and described out of those pits following FAO guidelines for soil description. Necessary supplementary observation were also made in identifying the soil series boundary correctly. Identified soil series were described thoroughly in benchmark pits or standard size pits and soil samples were taken from different horizon/layers. Altogether 18 soil samples from 3 pits and 32 composite samples of topsoil were collected, air dried, processed and analyzed in the laboratory.

Achievement/Findings:

BINA Sub-station is situated in the north-western side of Jamalpur town lying approximately at 24o56' north latitutde and 89o56' east longitude. It covers an area of 3.3 ha. The survey highlighted physical and chemical properties of soil, limitations and hazards inherent in the soil. The area lies in the physiographic unit of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain. The area have a relatively smooth, broad and nearly level landscape. The soils are mostly acidic to neutral in reaction containing low N, P and K. About 92% of the area is highland and 8% medium highland. During monsoon medium highland is shallowly (up to 0.3m) and remain inundated up to September. Soil Map, Land type map and Land capability map was prepared. The soils were classified as Inceptisols according to USDA system.
