Influence of Sowing Time on Seed Production of Groundnut

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during November 2010 to June 2011 to determine the appropriate planting time for maximizing yield and quality seed production of groundnut (var. BARI Chinabadam 7). Three sowing dates (Mid-November, Mid-December and Mid-January) were used as treatment variables. Mid-December sown crop took maximum time for flower initiation (60 days) and 100% flowering (73 days) and mid-November sown crop required only 43 days for flower initiation and 50 days for 100% flowering. Crop growth duration was also varied among the sowing time. Mid-November sown crop took maximum crop growth duration (190 days) and it was found minimum at mid-January sowing (148 days). Plant height gradually increased with the progressing of the growth duration at all the sowing time. Dry matter accumulation was found slow up to 90 days after sowing at mid-November and mid-December sowing and at harvest it was maximum in different plant parts at November sown crop. Among the different sowing time, CGR was found slightly higher up to 60-90 DAS and it was sharply higher at 120-maturity in mid-January sown crop. Yield and yield components differed significantly among the sowing dates. The highest pod yield (2186 kg/ha) was obtained from mid-December sowing and it was minimum in mid-November sowing (1876 kg/ha).

Objectives:

To determine the appropriate planting time for maximizing yield and quality seeds of groundnut.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during November 2010 to June 2011. Three sowing dates (Mid-November, Mid-December and Mid-January) were used as treatment variables. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The soil was silty clay loam in texture belonging to Chhiata series (AEZ-28) of Grey Terrace soil having low organic matter (0.97%) and deficient in total nitrogen (0.056%), available phosphorus (12ppm), exchangeable potassium (0.17 meq/100g soil) and available sulphur (10ppm). The crop received 449, 491 and 559 mm rainfall during the growing period of mid-November, mid-December and mid-January sowings, respectively. Unit plot size was 5m x 3m. Fertilizers @ 30-32-43-54-2 kg/ha NPKSB were applied in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and boric acid, respectively. All fertilizers were applied as basal. Intercultural operations like weeding, earthing up, irrigation, pesticide application were done as and when required. Data were recorded on days to flower initiation and 100% flowering, dry matter distribution in different plant parts, yield and yield components. Collected data were statistically analyzed and means were adjusted by LSD-test.

Achievement/Findings:

From this study it is concluded that prevailing temperature markedly influenced the crop growth, development and yield of groundnut (var. BARI Chinabadam 7). As a result, crop growth duration was found maximum in mid-November sowing (190 days) but pod yield was minimum (1876 kg/ha). Mid-December sown crop produced maximum pod yield (2186 kg/ha) which was at par with that of mid-January sowing (2025 kg/ha) and their crop growth duration were 168 and 148 days, respectively.
