Application of Statistical Tools in Estimating ‘gxe’ for Stable Genotype Identification of Rapeseed and Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genotype x Environment interaction as well as stability parameter was determined for yield in nine mustard genotypes across five different locations of Bangladesh. Genotypes, locations and ‘G x E’ interactions were found significant for yield. The estimates of stability parameters Pi, bi and for yield revealed that genotypes NAP 9906 and NAP 2001 showed Pi>0, insignificant bi (bi>1) and high values with higher mean yield indicated suitable for rich environment. The Genotypes NAP 0130, NAP 2033 and NAP 9901 showed Pi<0, insignificant bi (bi<1) and low values indicated suitable for poor environments. The two genotypes NAP0115 and BARIsarisa-8 showed Pi>0, insignificant bi (bi<1) and low values indicated suitable for all over the environments. The only one genotype NAP 0115 was found stable but BARI sarisa-8 was unstable because of significant values. Positive environmental index at Ishurdi and Jessore indicated high yield potential of the two places.

Objectives:

i. To develop and /or standardize the model for stability analysis BARI rapeseed and mustard varieties.

ii. To determine the stability index of BARI rapeseed and mustard

iii. To identify the bio-physical and socio-economic factors causing instability.

iv. To maintain year and location wise database on BARI rapeseed and mustard.

Methodology:

Nine promising rapeseed advance lines/varieties were used in the experiments conducted at five locations (environment) namely Joydebpur , Jessore, Ishurdi, Hathazari and Burirhut of ORC,BARI during rabi 2005-06 for yield. A randomized complete block design with four replications was followed in all locations. Means of individual genotype were regressed on environmental indices and stability parameters were estimated following Eberhart and Russell (1966).

BARI has so far developed 15 mustard varieties and many earlier released varieties have been loosing popularity with time and some of them are still maintaining high adoption –a favorable situation for testing the precision of the available stability models as well as developing new ones. For this, at least three years data will be required. By now, only one year data for mustard have been generated not enough to perform stability analysis. However, the available data were analyzed to identify the G x E interaction and to assess the stability of the varieties across the location. From the environmental mean, it was obtained that the highest grain yield (t/ha) was obtained from Jessore (2.51t/ha) followed by Ishurdi(1.90t/ha),Joydebpur(1.55t/ha),Hathazari(1.54t/ha) and Burirhat(1.48t/ha). Though NAP 9906 gave the highest mean yield over all environments, it did not perform well for all specific environments .It gave the highest yield at Jessore and Ishurdi. NAP 0115 and NAP 2001 gave the highest mean at Burirhut, Hathazari and Joydebpur respectively. The difference in yield among genotypes indicated their differential yielding ability under different environmental conditions.
