This study was conducted in two soybean growing areas namely Noakhali and Laxmipur district in Bangladesh during the year of 2007-2008. The results of the study indicated that soybean cultivation was profitable in both the areas. In general BCR was found to be 2.23 on full cost basis. Besides DRC ratio 0.39 indicate soybean production had comparative advantage rather than import. Input like human labour, seed, TSP, insecticides had significant impact on the yield of soybean. The level of technology adoption varied from low to over use. The study also revealed that among the competitive crops soybean was the second most profitable crop in the study areas. Soybean was high yielding and low cost crop in the study areas farmers of low income group can be suggested to cultivate this crop for obtaining higher benefit. If modern input and technology is adopted in the farmers’ field, yields and income would be increased. Therefore proper training and regular monitoring is essential to increase soybean production in study areas of Bangladesh.

  1. To estimate the cost and return of soybean cultivation at farm level
  2. To find out the technologies employed in soybean cultivation.
  3. To find out the disposal pattern of soybean.
  4. To measure the relative profitability of soybean cultivation with major competing crops
  5. To assess the comparative advantage of soybean production in Bangladesh.

The study was conducted in two districts namely Noakhali and Laxmipur, which covered about 80% of total soyabean growing areas of Bangladesh. In each district two Upazilas and from each Upazila one village was purposively selected to collect primary data and information from the sample farmers. The selected Upazilas were Noakhali sadar and Subarnachar under Noakhali district and Kamal nagar and Ramgoti under Laxmipur district. A list of soybean growers were collected from each area and a total of 100 sample taking 50 from each district were selected by simple random sampling technique for the study. Data were collected by survey method with the help of pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedules during December-January, 2007-2008. The collected data were summarized and analyzed to fulfill the objectives set for the study. Both the tabular and functional analysis was done for interpretation of the findings. To determine the contribution of some inputs on the yield of soybean, the Cobb-Douglas production model was used.

The highest cost was incurred for human labour (45%) including both family supplied and hired. The family supplied inputs were valued at the prevailing wage rate. The average cost of production on full cost basis was found to be Tk 15,023/ha. The higher cost of production per hectare was found in Laxmipur (Tk.15,378/ha) compared to Noakhali (Tk.14,657/ha) due to use of higher amount of human labour, manures and insecticides. The average yield of soybean was found to be 1536 kg/ha for all areas. There was no variation in yields of soybean in both the areas. The average gross margin in full cost basis was found to be Tk. 18,407 per hectare and it was Tk.22, 432 per hectare on cash cost basis. The benefits cost ratios (BCR) were calculated as 3.04 on cash cost basis and 2.23 on full cost basis. The level of adoption of seed rate was found to be low as because all the sampled farmers used higher amount (15%) of seed rather than its recommendation. About 92% of the total yields were sale after harvesting for using as poultry and fish feed. Only 0.25% was sold, as seed and 5.48% was stored as seed. As soybean is not yet very popular for consumption, very little amount (i.e.1.56% and 1.13%) was used as consumption and gift. The yield of soybean was higher (1532 kg) compared to other competitive crops. But, the higher gross return (Tk3 8547/ha) was obtained for groundnut cultivation. The higher gross margin was obtained from mungbean (Tk. 19,852/ha) cultivation followed by soybean (Tk.18,407/ha) when considered the total variable cost of production. The estimated DRC for soybean was 0.39. lack of capital followed by disease and insect infestation, higher price of fertilizers and insecticides, lack of proper knowledge and lack of land was major problem.
