Three varieties of indigenous potato (Lalpakri, Shilbilati and Hagrai/Sadagooti) were tested by planting their two seed size (26-29mm and 30-33mm) during rabi season of 2007-08 and 2008-09 at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur following RCB design. The highest yield (28.33 t/ha) was recorded from the Hagrai, which differed significantly with the other two varieties (Lalpakri, 25.43 t/ha and Shilbilati 17.33 t/ha) in 2007-08 while in 2008-09 Lalpakri produced the highest yield (22.50 t/ha). Average over the years, Lalpakri produced the maximum yield (22.97 t/ha) which was followed by Hagrai (22.28 t/ha). Number of tuber/hill, tuber weight/hill and yield showed significant variation due to seed size in both the year. Greater seed size (30-33mm) produced the highest number of tuber/hill (27.48), tuber weight/hill (269g) and yield (25.56 t/ha) which were significantly higher than those (22.64, 240.44g and 22.41 t/ha, respectively) produced by lower seed size, (26-29mm) in 2007-08 and similar trend was found in 2008-09. Interaction of variety and seed size exerted significant difference for stem/hill, number of tuber/hill, tuber weight/hill and yield in both the years., Significantly the highest yield (26.93 t/ha) was observed in variety Hagrai with larger seed size (V3S2). The variety Lalpakri with larger seed size also showed significantly higher yield than with smaller seed size. But larger and smaller seed size produced identical yield in variety Shilbilati. During 2008-09, the highest yield (25 t/ha) was noted in Lalpakri with larger seed size and the lowest (16.07 t/ha) in Shilbilati with smaller size. The results indicated that maximum tuber yield obtained from Lalpakri by planting greater size of seed followed by Hagrai by planting also greater size of seed.

To find out suitable seed size for higher yield.

The experiment was carried out at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during rabi season of 2007-08 and 2008-09. The soil of the experiment side was sandy loam having pH value around 5. The trial was set up in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Unit plot size was 3m x 3m. Seeds were planted on 12 November, 2007 and 15 November, 2008, respectively with a 50cm x 20cm spacing. Three varieties i.e. Lalpakri, Shilbilati and Hagrai in 2007-08 and Lalpakri, Shilbilati and Sadagooti in 2008-09 with two seed size (26-29mm and 30-33mm) were used as treatment. Manures and fertilizers were used at the rate of 10 t/ha cowdung and 150-55-150-22-5-1 kg/ha N-P-K-S-Zn-B. Half of urea and all other fertilizers were applied before final land preparation. The rest urea was applied at 30 days after planting (DAP). Weeding, earthling up, irrigation and plant protection measures were taken uniformly to all plots. The crop was harvested at full maturity on 18 February 2008 and 25 February 2009. Data on plant height, stem/hill, number of tuber/hill, weight of tuber/hill and yield were taken duly and analyzed using the Computer Program MSTAT.

The results revealed that larger seed size (30-33mm) for Lalpakri  would be optimum for higher yield (26.93 t/ha) of indigenous potato.
