Semi-detailed Soil Survey in Indigenous Potato Growing Areas

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Rajshahi district 5 unions of Bagmara and in Naogaon district 4 unions of Naogaon Sadar were identified as IPV growing areas. In Bagmara physiographic units include Ganges River Floodplain (75%) and Lower Atrai Basin (5%). In Naogaon physiographic units include Tista Meander Floodplain (83%) and Barind Tract (4%). Ten soil series were identified in study area under Bagmara of which Tahirpur, Teghar, Santhia, Batra covers major area. The soils are loam and clay. Seven soil series were identified in the study area under Naogaon sadar of which Dohali, Kaonia and Lashkara covers major area. The soils are loam and clay. Potato suitability ratings have been assessed on the basis of individual soil series and land types depending on important land qualities under rainfed and irrigated conditions.

Objectives:

4. Analysis and evaluation of soils in terms of nutrient content for fertilizer recommendation for IPV.

Methodology:

The basis of survey was aerial photo (1983,1:50,000 scale) interpretation supported by a planned field observations and laboratory analysis of representative topsoil composite samples. In general, field survey methods and descriptive terms were used according to USDA Soil Survey Manual. Traverse were planned at a distance of half-a-mile apart so as to examine the major landscape units and soils differentiated by analyzing aerial photos. The density of observation varied considerably from place to place depending on soil complexity. Following final checking and correlation, mapping units were drawn on aerial photos. The boundaries were later transferred to topographic map (1:50,000) to generate soil and land type map (1:50,000). Topsoil composite samples were collected @1 sample per 400 hectares. The laboratory analyses include pH, Organic carbon, active acidity and available nutrients (Ca, Mg, K, N, P, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn)following standard procedures.

Achievement/Findings:

In Rajshahi district 5 unions namely Ganipur, Bhabaniganj, Maria, Jhikra and Hamir Kusta of Bagmara and in Naogaon district 4 unions namely Tilakpur, Kirtipur, Baktarpur and Hapania of Naogaon Sadar were identified as IPV growing areas. The study area covers an area of about 199 square kilometer. In Bagmara physiographic units include Ganges River Floodplain (75%) and Lower Atrai Basin (5%). In Naogaon physiographic units include Tista Meander Floodplain (83%) and Barind Tract (4%). Ten soil series were identified in study area under Bagmara of which Tahirpur (23%), Teghar (17%), Santhia (15%), Batra (14%) covers major area. The soils are loamy and clayey. Seven soil series were identified in the study area under Naogaon sadar of which Dohali (48%), Kaonia (11%) and Lashkara (11%) covers major area. The soils are loamy and clayey. In Bagmara moderately suitable areas cover 5,898ha (48%) under rainfed condition while same area were rated highly suitable under irrigated condition. In Naogaon sadar highly suitable area under rainfed and irrigated condition were 4,042 ha and 4681 ha respectively. Moderately suitable area under rainfed and irrigated condition were 358 ha and marginally suitable area under rainfed condition were 281 ha. The soils of Tista Meander Floodplain were strongly acid to neutral and that Barind Tract were strongly to slightly acidic. Organic matter content of all the soils were low. N, K were below critical level while P, S were medium to optimum. Fertilizer recommendation were made on the basis of soil test results.
