Morphological Characterization of French Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty accessions of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) showed qualitative variations in plant growth habit, plant pigmentation, twining tendency and leaf colour. White and pink flower with not pigmented, pigmented wing and completely pigmented flower colour was noticed among the accessions. Edible pod colour was mostly light green. Black, white, cream, pink, dark brown, dark tan colours of seeds were found among the accessions. All the accessions exhibited indeterminate growth pattern, sub hastate leaflet shape, kidney type seed shape and smooth testa texture. Days to 50% flowering and edible pod stage ranged from 37 to 48 days and 63 to 79 days, respectively. Quantitative variations were observed in leaflet length and width, peduncle length, pods per cluster and hundred seed weight. Number of pods per plant varied from 4 to 22. The accessions exhibited 6.51 to 15.57 cm edible pod length and 0.8 to 1.46 cm pod width. The accessions produced 15 to 50.67 g of hundred seed weight. The highest CV (33.43%) was observed in number of pods per plant and the lowest (4.49 %) in days to edible pod stage among the French bean accessions.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre BARI, Joydebpur during winter 2011-12. Thirty local French bean accessions were planted in bed with 2m long 3 rows plot where row to row distance was 50cm. Chemical fertilizer were used @ 150kg N/ha, 40kg P /ha, 80kg K/ ha, 20kg gypsum/ha and 5kg Zn/ha. Seeds were sown in rows maintaining a distance of 15cm on 12 December 2011. Standard cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to have a good crop. Data were recorded as per descriptors of AVRDC, Taiwan.

Achievement/Findings:

The accessions exhibited erect (29 accessions) and climbing (1) growth habit. Majority number of accessions (27) expressed no plant pigmentation and minimum number (3 accessions) showed very slight pigmentation. Only sub-hastate type of terminal leaflet with dark green (29) and pale green (1) was found among the accessions. Flower colour pattern was white with light pink coloured wing was found in most (24) accessions but completely white pigmented flower (2 accession) and completely pigmented coloured pattern were also noticed into four accessions. White (25) and pink (5) coloured flower were found among the accessions. Uniformly light green pod was found in most accessions (28) and two accessions showed variegated coloured pod. Slightly curved (25) and straight (5) pod were found among the accessions. Dark brown (14 accessions), pink (5), blue (4), black (2), cream (1), golden (2), dark tan (1) and white (1) seed colour with kidney shaped and smooth surface seed looking uniform (27) and variegated (3) coloured pattern were found among the accessions. Days to 50% flowering and edible pod harvest ranged from 37 to 48 days and 63 to 69 days, respectively. In general, days to edible pod harvest was found at 26 days after the first flowering. On an average, leaflet length and leaflet width were 9.56 cm and 5.44 cm, respectively. The accessions showed 2.0 to 9.54 cm peduncle length. Number of pods per plant ranged from 4 to 22, pod length 6.51 to 15.57 cm and pod width 0.8 to 1.46 cm. The accessions exhibited 16 to 50.67 g of hundred seed weight. The highest CV was found in pods per plant (33.436%) followed by hundred seed weight (30.31%) and the lowest CV (4.49%) in days to first edible pod harvest.
