Present study was carried out to evaluate the economic performances of selected vegetable (tomato ) and fodders ( cowpea and barley ) which were grown under saline soils at different management sequences in Shatkhira during the rabi season of 2007-2008. The study revealed that the cultivation of tomato by the management of drip irrigation in raised bed with mulch received the highest yield and gross return while by the management of pipe irrigation in raised bed with mulch received the highest net return, benefit cost ratio and marginal rate of return. For the cultivation of fodders ( cowpea and barley ) by the management of pipe irrigation from STW in raised bed at 7 days interval received the highest yield, gross return and net return but by the management of pipe irrigation from STW in flat land at 7 days interval received the highest benefit cost ratio and marginal rate of return.

To evaluate the economic performances of selected crops and fodder grown under different management at farmers field

Three farmers were selected from three villages namely Daulatpur and Bolarhati under sadar upazila and remaining one is from Kulia under Debhata upazila of Shatkhira district for established the experiment in their field during the rabi season of 2007-2008. Tomato ( BARI Tomato-3) was selected as horticultural crop , however, cowpea( BARI Fellon-1) and barley (BARI Barley-4) were selected as fodder for the study. For the cultivation of crop and fodders, the management sequences were; For tomato in all sites: T1= Drip irrigation in raised bed with mulch T2= Drip irrigation in raised bed without mulch T3= Pipe irrigation in raised bed with mulch T4= Pipe irrigation in raised bed without mulch T5= Can irrigation in flat land without mulch (farmers practice) For cowpea and barley at Daulatpur and Bolarhati T1= Pipe irrigation from STW in raised bed at 7 days interval T2= Pipe irrigation from STW in raised bed at 15 days interval T3= Pipe irrigation from STW in flat land at 7 days interval T4= Pipe irrigation from STW in flat land at 15 days interval For cowpea and barley at Kulia: T1= Pipe irrigation in raised bed from canal saline water at 7 days interval T2= Pipe irrigation in raised bed from canal saline water at 15 days interval T3= Pipe irrigation in flat land from canal saline water at 7 days interval T4= Pipe irrigation in flat land from canal saline water at 15 days interval

The highest cost (Tk.143284/ha) of tomato cultivation was obtained by the management sequence T1 and the lowest cost (Tk.74053/ha) of cultivation was obtained by the management sequence T5. Net return and benefit cost ratio were higher in T1 over variable cost for all the locations. It was revealed from the study that the cost of cowpea (as fodder) production was the highest (Tk.30332/ha) in T1 and the lowest (Tk.26205/ha) was in T4 in all the locations and experiments. Comparing all, management sequence T1 in Bolarhati received the highest yield (71.66 ton/ha ), highest gross return (Tk.107490/ha) and highest net return both in over variable cost (Tk.91346/ha) and over total cost (Tk.77158/ha) where applied pipe irrigation from STW in raised bed at 7 days interval. But management sequence T3 obtained the higher benefit cost ratio both in over variable cost and total cost in respective locations. Cost of cultivation of barley (as fodder) was the highest in management sequence T1 ( Tk.38947/ha) and the lowest was in T4 (Tk.34819/ha). The highest cost of cultivation in T1 was mainly due to higher human labour required for bed preparation in T1 . Among the management sequences, T1 performed the best in respect of yield, gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio in both the locations. Comparing between the two locations, T1 in Daulatpur obtained the highest yield (74.33/ha), highest gross return (Tk.148660/ha), highest net return both in over variable cost ( Tk.124001/ha) and total cost( Tk. 109713) and benefit cost ratio both in over variable cost (6.03) and total cost(3.82) where applied pipe irrigation from STW in raised bed at 7 days interval.
