The experiment was conducted at Regional Plant Genetic Resources Centre, RARS, Ishurdi, Pabna to know the variability of 127 accessions of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench). Qualitative character variation was found in colour of plant and midrib, inflorescence exertion, compactness and its shape, synchrony of flowering, lodging susceptibility, grain covering, glume colour, awns, leaf senescence, graining shattering, stalk juiciness, grain colour, luster and its form, and endosperm colour. The accessions were classified into 2 to 8 groups among the qualitative characters. A good coefficient of variation was found in days to flowering, plant height, inflorescence length and width, number of flowering stem per plant, number of seeds per panicle, hundred seed weight and yield per plant (12.64 to 51% CV). Some promising accessions were identified.

The experiment was conducted at Regional Plant Genetic Resources Centre, RARS, Ishurdi, Pabna during winter of 2011-12. One hundred and twenty seven accessions of sorghum were used in this study. Unit plot size was 4m x 1m and seeds were sown in rows with spacing 40 cm. The seeds were sown on 3 November, 2011. The experiment was laid out in Alpha Lattice Design with two replications. Fungicide, insecticide and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Five plants were selected randomly from middle rows of each accession. Data were recorded as per IBPGR descriptor on Sorghum.

Pigmented (78 accessions) and tan (49) plant colour were found among the accessions. Colour of leaf midrib was white (70), dull green (1), yellow (28), brown (26) and purple (2). Inflorescence exertions was classified into slightly exerted (6.), exerted (47), well-exerted (69) and peduncle recurve (5). Inflorescence compactness and shape were loose erect primary branches (2), loose drooping primary branches (1), semi- loose erect primary branches (15), semi-loose drooping primary branches (25), semi-compact elliptic (46), compact elliptic (31), compact oval (6) and half broom corn (1). The maximum accession showed asynchrony in flowering (126) than synchrony (1). Lodging susceptibility was low in 125 accessions and the rest 2 accessions were in medium lodging susceptibility. Grain covering was 25% grain covered in 7 accessions, 50% in 47 accessions, 75% in 48 accessions, grain fully covered in 3 accessions and gluemes longer than grain were observed in 9 accessions. Glume colour was white in 14 accessions, mahogony (brown) in 1 accession, red in 9 accessions, purple in 11 accessions, black in 86 accessions and the rest 6 accessions were in grey. Grain luster was present in 81 accessions and absent in 46 accessions. Endosperm colour was white in 87 accessions and yellow in 40 accessions. Grain form was single in 126 accessions and twin in 2 accessions. The first female flower initiation was noticed in BD-9135 (55 days). The accessions were matured within 144 to152 days. Plant height, inflorescence length and number of seeds per panicle varied from 40.14 to 171.66 cm, 9.15 to 40.95 cm and 382 to 4530, respectively. The highest seed yield per plant (124.90 g) was recorded from accession BD-755 and the lowest (4.50 g) from BD-736. BD-755, BD-718, BD-720, BD-719, BD-709 and BD-4648 may be selected for high yielding (100.20 to 124.90 g).among the sorghum accessions.
