Effect of Nodal Position in Seed Quality of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on effect of nodal position in seed quality of soybean was conducted during rabi season of 2007-2008. Seed quality of three nodal position viz., nodes of top, middle and bottom portion of plant were evaluated in three soybean varieties/line (BARI Soybean 5, Sohag and Amber) in the present study. Nodal position and varietal effect on seed quality was significant. Seed size of middle nodes was higher than that of top and bottom nodes. Protein content (%) was significantly higher in seeds of top nodes than those of middle and bottom nodes while the oil content followed the reverse trend. Higher protein content was recorded in Amber while higher oil content was recorded in BARI Soybean- 5. Although nodal position and variety did not show any significant influence on vigor index, comparatively higher vigor index was recorded in seeds of top nodes and it was higher in Amber. Seeds from different nodes (top, middle and bottom of experiment 2007-2008) of soybean varieties were used in the experiment of 2008-2009 to evaluate nodal position effect on seed yield. Nodal position and variety did not show any significant influence on seed yield. However, seeds from top nodes gave 7-13% higher yield than those of other nodes.

Objectives:

To evaluate seed quality of the pods at different nodal position and its subsequent effect on seed yield.

Methodology:

The seed material used for this study (BARI Soybean-5, Sohag and Amber) were raised at BARI Farm, Gazipur during rabi season 2007-2008. Three nodal position viz.. top, middle and bottom nodes of plant of BARI soybean- 5; Sohag and Amber (advanced line) were evaluated in the present study. Soybean seeds were sown on 30th December 2007 and harvested on 20th April 2008. After harvest, the crop plant/canopy (pod bearing portion) was divided into three equal portions namely top, middle and bottom portion to evaluate seed quality. Seeds were separated from different plant portion, cleaned and sun dried. The threshed seed of each variety and from each portion of plants were collected separately and brought to the laboratory for analyzing the seed quality parameters like germination percentage, moisture content, vigor index, 1000-seed weight, protein and oil content. One hundred seeds from each sample (three replications) were placed in Petridis containing sterilized sand soaked with distilled water. Germination was continued for eight days. After eight days of germination ten seedlings from each sample were dried in an oven for 24 hours at 70 ⁰C and their weight was recorded on electronic balance. Vigor index was calculated by using the formula of Yadav and Sharma.(1999). Moisture content was measured by a digital seed moisture tester (Model 1200D, Seedburo Equipment Co. Chicago,). Protein and oil content of seeds of top, middle and bottom portion of soybean varieties were measured by Kjeldal method and Soxlet method, respectively. Seeds from different nodal position (top, middle and bottom, from experiment 2007-2008) of the three varieties were sown in field on 5th January 2009 to study the nodal position effect on seed yield. The crop was harvested on 29th April 2009. Yield component data were recorded from 10 plants randomly selected from each plot and yield data were recorded plot-wise. Data were analyzed statistically and mean separation was done by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Result revealed that seeds from top nodes are better than those of other nodes in respect of protein content, vigor index and seed yield.
