An experiment was conducted from October 2010 to May 2011 in the BRRI farm, Gazipur to observe performance and mechanism of some breeding lines selected as cold tolerant Boro rice. Four seeding time (15 Oct., 30 Oct., 15 Nov., 30 Nov. 2010) and four genotypes (IR77496-31-2-1-3-1 (tolerant to cold), IR62266-42-6-2 (tolerant to cold), BRRI dhan28 (susceptible to cold), BRRI dhan36 (tolerant only at the early vegetative stage) were used as treatments.15 October seeding IR77496-31-2-1-3-1 produced the highest grain yield (4.7 t/ha). 30 October seeding IR77496-31-2-1-3-1 also produced the best grain yield (6.07 t/ha). But in 15 November seeding the highest grain yield (6 t/ha) was obtained from BRRI dhan36. In case of 30 November seeding the highest grain yield (5.05 t/ha) was obtained from IR62266-42-6-2. Days to 50% flowering and maturity significantly decreased with the genotypes and date of seeding. IR77496-31-2-1-3-1 appears to be genotype tolerant to cold at the reproductive phase of the crop. The IR lines (IR62266-42-6-2) might have some tolerance too. However, further study is needed for confirmation.

To observe performance and mechanism of some breeding lines selected as cold tolerant Boro rice.

This study was conducted from October 2010 to May 2011 in the BRRI farm, Gazipur. Four seeding time (15 Oct., 30 Oct., 15 Nov., 30 Nov. 2010) and four genotypes (IR77496-31-2-1-3-1 (tolerant to cold), IR62266-42-6-2 (tolerant to cold), BRRI dhan28 (susceptible to cold), BRRI dhan36 (tolerant only at the early vegetative stage) were used as treatments. The first seeding was 15 October 2010 so that the genotypes would have the experience of low temperature stress at their vegetative as well as reproductive phase. A Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was used with three replications. Thirty-day-old seedling was transplanted at 20x20-cm spacing. Yield and yield components were measured and grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture level.

Grain yield was significantly affected by genotypes and time of seeding. For 15 October seeding IR77496-31-2-1-3-1 produced the highest grain yield (4.7 t/ha) compare to other genotypes of 10 October seeding IR77496-31-2-1-3-1 also produced the best grain yield (6.07 t/ha) compare to other genotypes. But in 15 November seeding the highest grain yield (6 t/ha) was obtained from BRRI dhan36. In case of 30 November seeding the highest grain yield (5.05 t/ha) was obtained from IR62266-42-6-2. From the above results two combinations, one was IR77496-31-2-1-3-1 genotypes in 30 October seeding and another was BRRI dhan36 in 15 November seeding produced the highest grain yield and these results obviously due to higher tiller/m2, grain yield/m2 and 1000 grain weight.Grains (No./m2) varied remarkably among the genotypes over the seeding times. It varied from 13427.78 to 28927.78 across the genotype and seeding times. Similarly, sterility (%) and 1000 grain weight (gm) varied significantly over the genotypes and seeding times.Sharp yield decrease was observed only in case of BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36 when they were transplanted using 15 October seeded seedlings.yields of all the genotypes (in together) showed a quadratic relationship with maximum as well as minimum temperature.Considering the yield level, critical minimum and maximum temperature could be estimated if we consider 2.5 tons (50% of the normal yield) as a critical value, we could easily find the critical temperature from the quadratic relation with the temperature. Accordingly, the critical is expected to around 13 and 280C. The study deserves more study for further clarification.Total days to 50% flowering and maturity at 15 October seeding gradually decreased at 30 October, 15 November and 30 November seeding.
