Evaluation of Brinjal Cultivars/ Lines Against Phomopsis Blight

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The highest percentage of leaf infection (66.92%) and fruit infection (21.50%) were recorded in Boropota begun kalo (T₆). The lowest percentage of leaf infection (30.17%) and fruit infection (21.50%) were recorded in Ranihat begun 1(T₁). The highest percentage of disease index (PDI) in leaf (43.19%) and in fruit (43.19%) were observed in Boropota begun kalo (T₆). The lowest percentage of disease index (PDI) in leaf (20.33%) and in fruit (20.17%) were observed in Ranihat begun 1(T₁).

Objectives:

To evaluate the eleven cultivars /lines of brinjal against Phomopsis blight.

Methodology:

Eleven brinjal cultivars/ lines, namely Ranihat begun-1(T₁), Ranihat begun-2(T₂), Boro begun Dulhazari (T₃), Jum begun sada Nazirhat (T₄), Boro begun sada Dulhazari (T₅), Boro begun kalo Hathazari (T₆), Pota begun sada (T₇), Jum begu kalo Nazirhat (T₈), Lamba begun Nazirhat (T₉) , Choto pota begun kalo (T₁₀), Islampuri (T₁₁), were used in this experiment. The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Regional Agricultural Research Station , Hathazari Chittagong, during November 2006 to March 2007. A well drained nursery bed was used for raising of seedling of eleven brinjal cultivars; The experimental field was properly prepared and added recommended doses of manures and fertilizers. The seedling of brinjal were carefully uprooted from nursery bed and transplanted in 2.25m ×1.8m unit plot maintaining 75cm row to row and 60cm plant to plant distance. Irrigation and weeding were done as and when necessary. The plants were inspected at 10 days interval to record the appearance of Phomopsis blight symptoms. The fungus was identified on the basis of field symptoms as described by Singh,1995. The experiment was laid out following randomized complete block design with three replications. The experiment was analyzed following computer package M-Stat methods. Treatment means were compared with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Data collection were done following the formula % Leaf / fruit infection=Number of Leaves/Fruit infected x100 Total no. of leaves / Fruit counted For estimation of leaf and fruit area diseased, the whole fruit and leaf surface area was considered as 100 and thereby the infected area was determined by eye estimation. The percent disease index of leaf and fruit was estimated according to standard area diagram of Islam et al. (1990).

Achievement/Findings:

From the above discussion it was revealed that Ranihat begun-1 (T₁) showed the lowest percentage of leaf infection as well as lowest percentage of fruit infection. So, from the study it was observed that Ranihat begun-1 (T₁) is less susceptible to Phomopsis blight compared to other cultivars/lines.
