The present study was undertaken to analyze the marketing systems of major fruits such as pineapple, banana, mango, guava, jackfruit and papaya both at farmers’ and intermediaries level. Based on the concentration of fruit production, 15 districts namely Tangail, Moulavibazar, Rangamati, Mymensingh, Norsingdhi, Bogra, Joypurhat, Jessore, Rajshahi, Nowabgonj, Maherpur, Pirojpur, Chittagong, Gazipur and Pabna were selected for the study. A total of 380 farmers taking 20 farmers from each area for each fruit, and 570 intermediaries taking 30 intermediaries were selected randomly from primary and secondary markets for the study. Four major channels were identified in fruits marketing system among which the channel-I (Farmer-Faria-Bepari-Aratdar-Retailer-Consumer) was ranked first. The production of selected fruits was found to be profitable to the farmers. High price gap was found between farmers and consumers level at peak harvesting period. The post-harvest losses of pineapple, banana, mango, guava, jackfruit and papaya were 13.8, 19.9, 18.7, 6.4, 10.9 and 21.7 percent, respectively of total fruit transaction. Low price, high transport cost, perishability, price instability, inadequate capital, lack of processing industry and inadequate storage facility were the major marketing problems encountered by both farmers and intermediaries.

i. To study the institutions and channels of fruits marketing

ii. To know the trend and seasonal variations of prices

iii. To quantify the post-harvest losses of fruits

iv. To find out the marketing efficiency

v. To explore the marketing problems of fruits at farmers and intermediaries, level

Three thanas namely, Modhupur, Sreemongal and Naniarchar under the districts of Tangail, Moulavi Bazar and Rangamati, respectively were selected for pineapple; five thanas namely Trisal, Monohordhi, Shibgonj, Joypurhat sadar and Jhenaidah under the districts of Rajshahi, Nawabgonj and Maherpur respectively, for mango; three thanas namely, Swarupkathi, Patia and Gazipur Sadar under the districts of Pirojpur, Chittagong and Gazipur, respectively for guava; three thanas namely, Sreepur, Modhupur and Ishurdi under the districts of Gazipur Tangail and Pabna, respectively for Jackfruits and two thanas namely, Jessore sadar and Gabtoli under the districts of Jessore and Bogra, respectively for papaya were purposively selected for the present study. Besides, one primary market and one secondary market were selected from each area for each fruit. A total of 380 farmers taking 20 farmers from each area for each fruit and 570 intermediaries taking 30 intermediaries (10 Faria, 10 bepari and 10 retailer) for each fruit were selected randomly from the primary and secondary markets. Two sets of pre-tested interview schedules, one for farmer and other for intermediaries were used for the collection of data by using survey method during April, 1998 to December, 2000.Marketing margins were calculated by deducting purchase price from sale price, while the profit was the difference between marketing margin and marketing cost. Post harvest loss was estimated per ton of fruits marketed through the channel Farmer-Faria-Bepari- Retailer-consumer that was identified as major channel. Aratdar was not taken into consideration in calculating margin and profit because they act as a commission agent. Tabular method of analysis was mostly used in this study.

1.   Budget:

The average cost of production per ton of pineapple, banana, mango, guava, jackfruit and papaya were Tk.1131, 3200, 2084, 1467, 1009and 2394 respectively. The cost of human labor, chemical fertilizer and rental value of land were found to be the major costs items in fruit production. The average cost of marketing per ton of pineapple, banana, mango, guava, jackfruit and papaya wereTk728,750,786,513,428 and 376 respectively. Among marketing costs, transport incurred the major share (36to 65%) of the total costs of fruit marketing. On an average, a farmer received Tk.2984, 8960, 18769, 6250, 4375 and 7030 as gross return for producing per ton of pineapple, banana, mango, guava, jackfruit and papaya respectively. The net returns for the aforesaid fruits were Tk.1125, 5010, 15899, 4270, 2938 and 4260 per ton, respectively. The benefit cost ratio of banana, mango, guava, jackfruit and papaya were estimated at 1.61, 2.27, 6.53, 3.16, 3.04 and 2.54 respectively. The average price of pineapple, banana, mango, guava, jackfruit and papaya were Tk.2984, 8960, 18769, 6250, 4375 and 7030 per ton, respectively. In fruit marketing, Bepari and retailer got the highest margin and profit due to higher sale price. Post harvest losses were worked out as 138, 199, 187 ,64, 109 and 217kg per ton of pineapple, banana, mango, guava, jackfruit and papaya marketing that represent 13.8, 19.9, 18.7, 6.4, 10.9 and 21.7 percent of the total volume of fruits handled by the farmers and traders of the marketing channel; Farmer-Faria-Bepari-Retailer-Consumer. This loss was found highest for Bepari due to transportation and loading/un-loading of fruits.
