Inherent nutrient supplying capacity for NPK was determined by QUEFTS model. The predicted yield potential showed a logarithmic relationship (Y=4.66lw(x) + 5.30, R2 =0.90) with the measured organic matter. The soils having higher OM content possess higher capacity of nutrient and have also higher nutrient capacity. High organic matter containing soils provides better rooting ability for lowland rice.

To determine the achievable yield and fertilizer requirement of rice based on soil nutrient availability.

The experiment involves 29 soil samples from Natore, Rajshahi (Mohanpur and Tanore) and Meherpur across AEZ 5, 11 and 26. Soil samples were collected from 0-15 cm depth along with past yield data and fertilizer application from the concerned farmers. The soil samples were analysed for pH, organic matter, available phosphorus and exchangeable K following the standard methods. Soil inherent nutrient supplying capacity for N, P and K was determined following the QUEFTS model described by Janssen et al (1990). The potential supply of nitrogen (SN) in kg/ha is estimated from soil organic carbon determined by Walkley and Black (1934) method (CWB) and soil pH as Where, The boundary for pH is 7.0 -4.5, and organic carbon  7.0% (70 g/kg). The potential supply of phosphorus (SP) in kg/ha is determined by QUEFTS from CWB, Olsen P and pH as, where, The potential supply of potassium (SK) in kg/ha is estimated from exchangeable K and CWB. According to Janssen et al (1990) the potential supply of each of the nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium proved related to pH but in different ways. This is expressed in the correction factors fN, fP and fK. For convenience the coefficients were chosen in such a way that fN, fP and JK have values between 0 and 1 for pH (H20) ranging from 4.5 to 7. Fertilizer requirement were also determined from the estimated SN, SP and SK values from QUEFTS model.

Soils in AEZ5 of Natore had pH 6.73±0.27, organic matter 1.89±0.20%, available P 31±26 ppm, exchangeable K 0.42±0.02 and available Zn 2.8±0.2 ppm. Soils in Rajshahi of AEZ 11 had pH 7.61±0.14, organic matter 1.90±0.14, available P 17±6 ppm, exchangeable K 0.19±0.05 cmol/kg and available Zn 2.7±1.0 ppm. The soils of Meherpur and Faridpur of AEZ11 had pH 7.56±0.10 and 7.72, organic matter 2.07±0.17 and 2.53, available P 17±3 and 18 ppm, exchangeable K 0.32±0.02 cmol/kg and 1.51 cmol/kg, available Zn 3.3±0.6 ppm and 2.7 ppm, respectively. Out of 29 samples, 13 showed phosphorus content below critical level of 6 ppm, while only one soil had exchangeable potassium content below 0.1 cmol/kg. The tested soils showed a wide range of attainable yield from 6.0 to 10.0 t/ha. Soils in the AEZ26 of Tanore upazila in Rajshahi showed the lowest yield potential of 6.22±0.15 and the requirement of N, P and K for that yield level would be 175, 8 and 8 kg/ha, respectively. The predicted attainable yield in AEZ5 at Natore was 7.88 t/ha and the corresponding doses of N, P and K were 175, 8 and 8 kg/ha, respectively. Soils of AEZ 11 in Natore had predicted yield potential of 9.10±0.40 t/ha with the N, P and K doses of 159±13, 19±6 and 134±17 kg/ha, respectively. The Rajshahi soils (AEZ 11) demonstrated the predicted yield potential of 8.50±0.20 t/ha and the calculated doses of N, P and K were 169±4, 10±5, and 149±27 kg/ha, respectively. The predicted N dose in Meherpur was similar to Rajshahi, while the P and K doses were lower than Rajshahi. Soils of Bhanga, Faridpur (AEZ 11) showed a potential yield of 10.0 t/ha with only N application of 164 kg/ha, but no P and K application.
