Adult Longevity of Trichogramma Zahiri at Different Constant Temperatures

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The adult male and female longevity of Trichogramma zahiri at different constant temperature was studied in the laboratory and found that at 18, 22, 26, 30 and 34^oC the longevity were 3.87, 3.7, 3.6, 3.07 and 1.1 days for male and 4.1, 3.93, 3.87, 3.6 and 1.17 days for female. Longevity of both sexes decreased significantly when temperature increased from 18 to 34^oC. No significant difference in longevity of both sexes was found at temperature range of 18 to 26^oC. Female longevity was always higher than the male longevity at all the temperatures but the differences was statistically insignificant.

Objectives:

To know the adult male and female longevity of T. zahiri in different constant temperature.

Methodology:

Newly emerged adults of T. zahiri were separated and reared in pairs (male and female) inside 2 ml Eppendorf safe-locked micro centrifuge tubes. Six to eight holes were made on the lid of the tube with a fine needle to provide aeration inside the tube. Twenty-five percent honey solution was smeared on the lid as a source of food for the parasitoid. The small holes on the top of the lid allowed honey solution to leak inside which the parasitoid would feed upon. The tubes were placed inside the incubator at 18, 22, 26 30 and 34ºC temperature and checked every 6 hours for survival and mortality of the parasitoid. Any unnatural mortality caused to the parasitoid by adhering to the honey solution were excluded from the record. The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design (CRD). Thirty pairs of T. zahiri were used in each temperature and each parasitoid was considered as one replication. The variables adult male and female longevities among treatments were compared one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's Post-hoc Test at 0.05 level (SPSS, V. 19; 2011).

Achievement/Findings:

The longevity of adult T. zahiri of both sexes decreased with the increasing temperature. The adult longevity of male decreased 3.87 to 1.1 days when temperature increased from 18 to 34^oC. Similar trend of longevity was found in case of female. The highest longevity of female was 4.1 days at 18^oC and the lowest was 1.17 days at 34^oC. At 18, 22, 26, 30 and 34^oC the parasitoids longevity was recorded as 3.87, 3.7, 3.6, 3.07 and 1.1 days for male and 4.1, 3.93, 3.87, 3.6 and 1.17 days for female. Longevity of both sexes decreased significantly when temperature increased from 18 to 34^oC. No significant difference in longevity between the sexes was found at temperature range of 18 to 26^oC. Female longevity was always higher than the male longevity at all the temperatures but the differences was statistically insignificant. A prolonged longevity was evident both for male and female 3.87 and 4.1 days respectively at a rearing temperature of 18^oC. The male and female parasitoid lived only for 1.10 and 1.17 days respectively at high temperature of 34^oC. It clearly indicates that the existence of adult parasitoid is dependent on the environmental temperature. High temperature is a great threat for the survival of the parasitoid T. zahiri. A range of low to intermediate temperature is favourable for the survival of the parasitoid. Therefore it would not be wise to release T. zahiri in field at temperature 34^oC and above.
