Screening Sugarcane Clones Based on Maturity Behavior and Gur Manufacture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The maturity of sugarcane is essentially a varietal character though maturity is largely regulated by environmental factors and management practice. The early maturing potential sugarcane varieties have direct impact for higher sugar and gur recovery at early stage of crushing. A variety suitable for sugar production may not be equally suitable for gur production. Selection of sugarcane clones suitable for good quality gur production on the basis of high sugar and low reducing sugars content, medium stalk diameter, low fibre content are important. In some areas of Bangladesh early gur making starts from August. Due to lack of suitable gur making early maturing variety, gur makers are manufacturing gur from old indigenous degenerated varieties. As a result, gur production is low and quality of gur is poor. The gur makers use chemical clarificants to improve the colour of gur. Chemical clarificants are hazardous for human health. Therefore, it is important to identify early maturing sugarcane varieties/clones for production of good quality gur.

Objectives:

To determine maturity behaviour of sugarcane clones and find out peak maturity period.
To screen sugarcane clones suitable for gur production.
To determine the quality of gur after preparation.

Methodology:

Selected sugarcane clones under ZYT I, II & III test stages will be planted at BSRI farm in the month of October 2011. Similar intercultural operations and management practices will be followed for all the clones. Chemical analysis for Brix, Pol, Purity, Reducing sugars, P₂O₅ and Pol % cane will be determined starting from mid September 2012 and to be continued up to March 2013. The chemical analyses of all the clones will be done once in a month with three replications. On basis of chemical analyses, the clones will be grouped as early, medium and late maturing potential. The clones showing pol percent cane 10.5% and above in mid October with 0.5% reducing sugars content will be grouped as early maturity potential and the same obtained in November and December will be grouped as mid and late maturing potential clones. Gur will be prepared from the same clones in the month of October, December and February by open pan boiling method without avoiding chemical clarificants. The physical and chemical properties of prepared gur will be determined within 7(seven) days of its preparation to screen suitable clones for production of superior quality of gur.

Achievement/Findings:

Released 9 sugarcane varieties suitable for gur making (having golden/light brown colour of gur). Released varieties are Isd 16, Isd 26, Isd 30, Isd 35, Isd 36, Isd 37, Isd 38, Isd 39 and Isd 40 Quality of gur manufactured using these varieties are superior having golden yellow colour. No need to use any chemical clarificants for gur manufacturing Sugarcane varieties have been classified as early, medium and late maturing behaviour. Early maturing varieties are Isd 16, Isd 26, Isd 30, Isd 33, Isd 35, Isd 36, Isd 37, Isd 38, Isd 39 and Isd 40. Medium maturing varieties are Isd 2/54, Isd 18, Isd 19, Isd 20, Isd 25, Isd 28, Isd 29, Isd 31, Isd 32 and Isd 34
