The trial was conducted at the farmer’s field of Farming System Research and Development site, Kadamshahar, Rajshahi during the early rabi season of 2006-2007 to evaluate the productivity and profitability of sixteen tomato varieties/lines under High Barind environment. Tomato varieties/lines included in this experiment were BARI Hybrid Tomato-3, BARI Hybrid Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-5, Abinash-3, Sathi, Safal, Hitom, Sabal, Annel, T-1458, T-1387, T-848, T-2028, Minto and Surrokha. The results revealed that all the studied parameters, namely, days to first flowering, plant height, number of fruit plant-1, horizontal and vertical diameter fruit-1, fruit weight plant-1, weight of single fruit and marketable yield at different dates of harvest varied significantly. Amongst the studied varieties/lines, the highest yield (34.83 t ha-1) was obtained from the advanced line T-1458 followed by T-1387 (34.15 t ha-1), whilst the lowest yield was given by Safal (24.13 t ha-1). From the economic view it was observed that the advance line T-1458 attributed the maximum gross and net returns (Tk. 328780 and 257580 ha-1, respectively) as well as benefit cost ratio (3.62). The lowest amount of gross and net returns was obtained from the BARI Hybrid Tomato-3 (Tk. 260380 and 189180 ha-1, respectively). It was followed that early harvest of tomato fruit got high market price that ultimately contributed to higher amount of gross and net returns. Therefore, the advanced line of tomato T-1458 can be recommended for cultivation under High Barind environment.

To evaluate the productivity and profitability of sixteen tomato varieties/lines under High Barind environment.

The trial was carried out in the farmers’ field of Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) site, Kadamshahar, Rajshahi during the rabi season of 2006-2007. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) having three replications. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2.4 m. Sixteen tomato varieties/lines: two open pollinated viz. BARI Tomato-4 (BT-4), BARI Tomato-5 (BT-5); and fourteen hybrid varieties/lines viz. BARI Hybrid Tomato-3 (BHT-3), BARI Hybrid Tomato-4 (BHT-4), Abinash-3, Sathi, Safal, Hitom, Sabal, Annel, T-1458, T-1387, T-848, T-2028, Minto, Surrokha were used in the trial. The seed was sown in the seedbed on 21 August 2006. The 30 day-old seedlings were transplanted in the main plots on 20 September 2006 maintaining a spacing of 60 cm ´ 50 cm. The experimental plot was applied with recommended does of fertilizers at the rate of 85-30-45-10-1 kg ha-1 N-P-K-S-B, respectively in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and boric acid, respectively and 10 ton ha-1 cowdung (FRG, 2005). The triple super phosphate, boric acid and cowdung were applied during the final land preparation as a basal dose. Muriate of potash and urea fertilizers were applied in two installments at 25 and 40 days after transplanting, respectively. During the crop-growing period the irrigation was applied three times depending upon the soil moisture status. The tomato plant was sprayed with an insecticide namely Admire-200 SL @ 1 ml litre-1 water and fungicide Ridomil Gold MZ-68 WP @ 2g litre-1 water for four times to keep the plant free from insect and diseases. After each of irrigation, mulching was done to break the crust formed on the soil surface. Weeding and other intercultural operations were also done as needed. The marketable tomato fruit was harvested at ten days interval ranging from 30 November to 30 December 2006. The data on days to first flowering, plant height, number of fruit plant-1, horizontal diameter fruit-1, vertical diameter fruit-1, fruit weight plant-1, single fruit weight and yield were recorded. The economic return was calculated based on the existing market price of tomato. All the data were statistically analyzed and the means were tested by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) following Gomez and Gomez (1984) using computer software programme MSTAT-C.

The economic analysis of sixteen tomato varieties revealed that the advance line T-1458 contributed to the maximum gross and net returns (Tk. 328780 and 257580 ha-1, respectively), whilst the second highest returns were found from T-1387 (Tk. 320807 and 249607 ha-1, respectively). These two advanced lines also provided the highest benefit cost ratio (3.62 and 3.51, respectively). The lowest amount of gross and net returns was obtained from the BARI Hybrid Tomato-3 (Tk. 260380 and 189180 ha-1, respectively). Similarly, Minto, BARI Hybrid Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-4 and Surrokha also gave good value of benefit cost ratio (3.50, 3.35, 3.20 and 3.17, respectively). It was observed that the tomato varieties/lines, that gave the higher marketable yields of fruit during the early harvest, got high market price, which ultimately contributed to higher amount of gross and net returns. The economic analysis showed the lowest benefit cost ratio (2.13) from the tomato variety Safal followed by Sabal (2.58). Tomato advanced line T-1458 may be recommended for cultivation under the High Barind environment condition due to its high productivity as well as profitability.
