Testing and Standardization of Non-woven and Knitted Jute Products

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different physical properties of two types of felt such as density, thickness, bending length, flexural rigidity, bending modulus and moisture regain percentage were determined. Studies were made on the two types of felt one from jute caddies (100% jute) and the other from 80% jute and 20% man-made fiber (viscose). It was observed that the blended one was less stiff than another one. This high moisture regains means that the hygroscopicity of felts made from 100% caddis is higher than the blended one.

Objectives:

To measure the physical jute fabrics having different warp and weft construction

Methodology:

Non-woven and knitted products are conventionally manufactured from cotton, wool, and man-made fibers. But BJRI (Tech) has been able to manufacture some non-woven knitted products from jute and its blends. In this work two types of felt were studied. Different physical properties of these felts such as density, thickness, bending length, flexural rigidity, bending modulus and moisture regain percentage were determined as per standard test methods in the standard atmosphere of R.H. (65±2)% and temperature of (20±2)ºC.

Achievement/Findings:

In the study different properties of two felts sample one made from jute caddies 100% jute and the other from 80% jute and 20% viscose, were determined. From the data it was found that the thickness, the flexural rigidity, and bending length of bleached felt were much higher than those made of 100% jute caddis. But bending modulus was lowest in case of blended one. So the samples made of 100% jute caddis were stiffer than the blended one. The moisture regain of felts made from 100% caddis was higher than blended one which means that the hygroscopicity of felts made from 100% caddis are higher than the blended one.
