Studies on the Physic-mechanical Properties of Jute, Kenaf and Allied Fibres

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The physico-mechanical properties of seven accessions/new varieties of Tossa jute with the check varieties 0-9897, four accessions/new varieties of white jute with check varieties CVL-I and eleven accessions/new varieties of kenaf fiber with check varieties CH-2 were studied. All the Tossa varieties were good in quality expect the variety NY/091C. Out of five white jute varieties all the accessions were inferior compared to check varieties CVL-1. All the Kenaf varieties were acceptable expect the variety PI-343136.

Objectives:

To evaluate the textile qualities of the new varieties of jute and allied fibres

Methodology:

In this study eight fiber varieties of Tossa(Corchorus olitorius), five fibre varieties of white jute(Corchorus Capsularies), and twelve varieties of kenaf (Hibicus cannabinus) produced by BJRI (Agriculture) through new germ-plasm supplied by IJO, have been used. The fibers were produced under the same Agronomic conditions. Various physic o-mechanical properties of these fibers such as fineness, bundle strength and bursting energy, tenacity etc, were determined through standard test methods and regression analysis. Test work was done in the standard atmosphere of temp.(20 ± 2?)C and RH (65±2)%.

Achievement/Findings:

The physico-mechanical properties of fibers determine their performance and suitability for their spinning. Thus, the physic o-mechanical properties of seven accessions/new varieties of Tossa jute with the check varieties 0-9897, four accessions/new varieties of white jute with check varieties CVL-I and eleven accessions/new varieties of kenaf fiber with check varieties CH-2 were studied. It was observed that bundle strength of Tossa jute from 9.27 to 12.25 lbs/mg. The fineness of all the varieties were within acceptable range. It was observed that bundle strength of white jute from 8.23 to 10.01 lbs/mg. Thus compared to all other varieties CVL-1 was the best quality. The fineness in micron of all was comparatively lower which was favorable for spinning. It was observed that bundle strength of kenaf fiber from 7.62 to 11.26 lbs/mg. Thus DS/025H was the best quality. The fineness of all the varieties were acceptable. Thus, with the respect to fiber quality all varieties are acceptable expect the variety PI-343136.
