Development of an Objective Method of Classification of Bangladesh Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Using random samples of different quality and analysis of data developed a method of classification of Bangladesh jute. Random samples of different quality collected and examined. From the data the test results of lusture and whiteness agrees well with grades assessment for almost all the grades tested. Both are generally in descending order from higher to lower grades. But with respect to bundle strength this agreement is not found. Quality ratios of yarns spun from BTD & BTE were found to be higher than that from BTC. Bursting Energy is in ascending order from lower grades and this may help us in grading.

Objectives:

To compare the random samples of different quality and analysis of data to develop an method of classification of Bangladesh jute.

Methodology:

Method of collection of samples: - The samples were collected from only those bales which were opened by the Experimental Mill. Each bale contains 80 heads of jute called morahs. Each morah weighs about 5 lbs more or less so that the weight of the bale is 400 lbs. The bale was divided in to 30-35 parts by taking groups of 2-3 morahs at a time. Bundles of reeds were taken from all these groups and mixed together to make a samples of about 45 lbs, which was then divided into three approximately equal parts of about 15 lbs each. One of these parts was kept a part for Spinning trial and the remaining two parts were mixed together. From this mixing sub. samples of about 8 lbs. were collected for the measurements of luster and whiteness properties.

Method of measurements: Lusture was determined by Leukometer without using any filters. Whiteness was also determined by Leukometer but using green filter according to usual procedure. Bundle strength was determined by Pressely fibre bundle strength tester using zero gauge length. After breaking the bundle was taken of from the clamps and weighed by precision balance. Busting Energy was determined by loading the fibers ballistically and measuring the amount of work absorbed in breaking the fibers the apparatus used for this purpose has been introduced by BJTRA yarn breakage factor was calculated from data on fineness and Bursting Energy. Breaking tenacity and breaking extension were determined by INSTRON UNIVERSAL TESTING INSTRUMENT employing strain gauge principle.

Achievement/Findings:

From the data the test results of lusture and whiteness agrees well with grades assessment for almost all the grades tested. Both are generally in descending order from higher to lower grades. But with respect to bundle strength this agreement is not found, because although as per specification lower grades such as BTD & BTE is to have lower strength, it was found that they are in fact stronger than grade BTC. Moreover, quality ratios of yarns spun from BTD & BTE were found to be higher than that from BTC.Bursting Energy is in ascending order from lower grades and this may help us in grading. In case of Kutcha grades also, luster and whiteness are descending order from higher to lower grades. A rough relationship between graders estimate and corresponding measurement of (a) Lustre and (b) Bundle strength. For each sample the range of values obtained is wide and overlapping but the averages for several samples of the same quality lies within a comparatively narrow range.
