Collection, Evaluation and Conservation of Indigenous and Exotic Germplasm of Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This Program was conducted to collect and conserve germplasm of sugarcane in the germplasm bank of BSRI, Ishurdi and RSRS, Gazipur during the cropping season 2009-2010. After collection of germplasms from abroad were evaluated at Quarantine Station, Joydebpur for three generations. After performing the quarantine formalities the materials were brought at BSRI. In case of local collection, the germplasm were brought at BSRI and planted in pots to multiply and to evaluate different characteristics. After evaluation selected germplasms were conserved in the germplasm bank of BSRI. In the germplasm bank of BSRI, 1091 germplasms were maintained among which 1050 were S. officinarum and 41 were S. spontaneum. Of the officinarum sp. 511 were Institute bred, 208 local and 331 foreign varieties. Among the 1091 germplasms, 300 (including S. spontaneum) were flowering in habit. Besides 175 germplasms (S. officinarum) were maintained in the germplasm bank of RSRS, Gazipur.

Objectives:

I. To collect and conserve indigenous and exotic sugarcane clones for using as parent materials and commercial varieties II. To enrich the germplasm bank III.To increase the scope of hybridization

Methodology:

Imported germplasms from abroad were evaluated at Quarantine Station, Joydebpur for three generations. After performing the quarantine formalities the materials were brought at BSRI and planted in 1m × 4m plot for further evaluation in the field condition. In case of local collection, the germplasm were collected in the month of September-October, 2009. from different parts of the country. Before collection, the sugarcane growing area of the country were listed down. Later on, the collected area were sealed out in the list to avoid the duplication of germplasms. The collected materials were labeled with local name, location, date of collection, flowering habit, etc. The collected germplasms were planted in pots to multiply and to evaluate different characteristics. The germplasms were evaluated in the month of August-November, 2010 by a task force of Breeder, Entomologist and Pathologist. After evaluation, all the selected germplasms were planted in a furrow of 3m long with 18 two-eyed setts. Thus the germplasms were conserved in the germplasm bank of BSRI. To save the foreign germplasm from degeneration they were planted and maintained in mini germplasm bank of RSRS, Gazipur. The germplasm(s) showed promising for commercial cultivation were multiplied for further evaluation and the flowering materials were planted in breeding nursery for using in hybridization programme. These germplasms were planted in a furrow of 10m long with 30 three-eyed setts.
