Survey on Quantitative Losses of Pulse Seeds by Callosobruchus Chinensis L. in a Local Market

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was made at different shops of a local market to assess the quantitative seed damage and weight losses of four types of pulses due to infestation of pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L. The survey samples contained 72.28-95.69 % normal seeds with remaining egg bearing and holed seeds. The seed damage of 3.8 % was found in Sonamung, 2.3 % Ghasimung, 2.00 % Mashkalai and 1.34 % Thakrikalai except on one occasion. The weight loss of the seeds followed the same pattern as the seed damage with 0.8-2.9 % loss. Top layer of the stock contained more damaged seeds than bottom layer and same with the weight loss. The seed samples from the side of the plastic bags showed significantly different seed damage and weight loss at three depths.

Objectives:

To evaluate the extent of damage and weight loss of four different types of pulses due to attack by pulse beetle, C. chinensis during sale.

Methodology:

A survey was carried out at the shops of Mymensingh town market to assess the seed damage and weight loss of pulse seeds caused by C. chinensis from 19^th July to 1^st September, 2008. During survey samples of 250-1000 g of Ghasimung, Sonamung, Mashkalai and Thakrikalai were collected from different shops at weekly intervals. Sonamung and Mashkalai are cultivated in different places of Bangladesh but Ghasimung and Thakrikalai are locally grown in Chapai Nawabgonj and supplied in different places of the country. The pulses were stored in the plastic bags and sold in the shops of open place, small buildings and under shade of the market. The samples of each pulse seeds were collected in paper bags from the shops and brought back to the laboratory. From each sample, 100 g seeds were selected and separated as damaged and undamaged seeds. The damaged seeds were examined on the egg plugs and hole(s) produced by the beetles. The weight losses of pulse seeds were found out by subtracting the final weight of holed seeds from initial weight divided by initial weight. The weight losses were converted into percentage of the weight losses of pulse seeds. In this survey, distribution of pulse beetles infesting the stored seeds of pulses in the plastic bags for sale was studied in the shops. For this purpose, seed samples of Sonamung were taken from center and two sides of the bags with a core sampler at weekly interval. The sampler collected the seeds from top, middle and bottom layers of the bag. The seed samples were brought to the laboratory. From the collected seed samples, normal and damaged seeds were separated and counted to find damage percentages at different depths.

Achievement/Findings:

The survey in the market revealed overall 3.86% damaged seeds and 1.99% weight loss of four types of pulses by C. chinensis. However, the traders sold 89.60% normal seeds along with some egg bearing seeds and damaged seeds, for that buyers had to give some losses. Pulse beetles, C. chinensis were mostly distributed around the top most layers of the stock, so the damage and weight loss were maximum at upper layers.
