Studies on Softening of Low Grade Jute and Cuttings by Chemical Means.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The investigation envisages to macerate cuttings by selective elimination of cementing materials and non – fibrous constituents from the jute fibre by chemical means. Pectins, lignin and hemicellulose contents in cuttings are high for improper microbial change during field retting. It is known that lignin , hemicellulose etc. are soluble in very dilute caustic soda solution ; while pectins are soluble in ammonium oxalate and oxalic solution. So it is evident that alkali and sulphite boiling in the experiment removed lignin and hemicellulose partially whereas fats / lipids were saponified simultaneously.Pectins and minerals were removed by NH4 Oxalate and Oxalic acid treatment. NaClO2 treatment at pH 5.0 – 5.5 resulted mild bleaching . Usually the yarns of sacking and hessian from BWC have QR of 85% and 105% respectively. The quality ratios of the spun yarns of softened jute cuttings and long jute in the proportion 20:80 conform closely with above values. From this, it may be inferred that hard cut jute cuttings can be chemically upgraded to BWC jute for manufacturing yarns suitable for hessian ( 8 lb/spy) .

Objectives:

To reduce manufacturing cost of the jute products by making use of jute cuttings, jute auxiliaries, low grade jute and other indigenous material.

Methodology:

Chemical softening of low grade jute and cuttings : 2.5 lbs ribbon cutting was treated with 1.0% NaOH and 0.5% Na2 SO4. After boiling for one hour the sample was washed thoroughly with cold water. The sample was further boiled for 15 minutes with 0.5% NH4 Oxalate,0.5% Oxalic acid and 0.5% NaClO2 treatment. The sample liquor ratio was 1: 8. The resulting fibre was spun with 80% long jute in two batches.

Achievement/Findings:

A simple and easy chemical method has been developed to soften hard jute cuttings for spinning in admixture with long jute in the ratio of 20 : 80. Alkali and sulphite boiling and subsequent treatment with ammonium oxalate oxalic acid and mild bleaching with sodium chlorite are found suitable for the process. Spinning trial of the samples in the experimental mills gave satisfactory and encouraging results.
