Photoperiodic Regulation of Flowering in Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted to induce flower and synchronize the flowering time of different varieties/clones of sugarcane at BSRI, Ishurdi, Pabna during the cropping season 2009-2010. A number of 68 germplasms under early, mid-late, late, sparse and non-flowering groups, were given photoperiodic treatment for different hours starting from the first week of May, 2010. Out of 68 varieties/ clones 45 showed flower initiation of which 41 were found to be emerge flower. From flowered germplasms 53 biparental crosses, 7 polycrosses and 6 selfings were done.

Objectives:

Methodology:

a) ADVANCEMENT OF FLOWERING IN MID-LATE AND LATE FLOWERING VARIETIES/ CLONES During 2009-2010 cropping season, 18 germplasms were given photoperiodic treatment. All the germplasms were planted in drum (20"×16") in the last week of November 2009. Before plantation the drums were filled up with a media composed of soil, pressmud and sawdust (3:2:1). Recommended doses of fertilizers and insecticides were applied. Cultural practices were done as per requirement. All the germplasms in drum were placed on rail cart in the last week of May and photoperiodic treatment were started from first week of June 2010. A constant photoperiodic treatment of 12.45 hrs were given for 30 days from starting. After 30 days treatment, day length were reduced 1 minute per day until it reaches 11.30 hrs photoperiodic length. The 11.30 hrs photoperiodic treatment were continued until natural day length reaches 11.30 hrs. b) DELAYING FLOWERING OF EARLY FLOWERING VARIETIES/ CLONES A number of 16 germplasms were used for this experiment. The germplasms were placed under light treatment on the first week of August, 2010. Every day treatment were given for one hour at night from 11 p.m. to 12 p.m. and were continued for one month. Later on, flowering dates of different germplasms were recorded and through synchronization hybridization work were performed. c) INDUCTION OF FLOWER IN SPARSE AND NON-FLOWERING VARIETIES/ CLONES Under this programme, 18 germplasms were given photoperiodic treatment in three chambers. In two chambers (non-flowering), a constant photoperiodic treatment of 13.30hrs and in one chamber (sparse-flowering) 13.00hrs treatments were given for 30 days from starting. After 30 days, day length were reduced @ 45sec. per day in two chambers (one non-flowering and one sparse-flowering) while in one chamber (non-flowering) @ 30 sec. per day until it reaches to 11.30 hrs photoperiodic day length. And this 11.30 hrs photoperiodic treatment were continued until natural day length reaches to 11.30 hrs. Later on, flowering dates of different germplasms were recorded and through synchronization hybridization work will be done. Treatments were started from the first week of May, 10.
