Technology Packaging and Dissemination of New Research Information for Higher Productivity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Main objective of the project was to refine and package technologies, which are profitable and sustainable (generated by the NARS/universities and other) and facilitate their wider dissemination for the farming and small business communities. This study was under taken by BARC with NARS Institutes/Universities. In order to facilitate the technology refinement and validation activities, BARC awarded funds to institutes (NARS/University) for implementation of sub projects on specific technologies needed to be refined/verified in the sub-sectors of crops, livestock, fisheries and forestry since inception of the project. Under this component, promising technologies of the sub sectors of agriculture (Crops, livestock, fisheries and forestry) generated primarily by the NARS institutes would be transferred to the resource poor farmers of the potential areas. Implementation of the year round vegetables production program could help the farmers to produce different vegetables in a single piece of land. Farmers were realized to the technologies and earned higher income from relaying of maize with potato than sole crop of either maize or potato. Rice productions have been increased with the adoption of improved water management and pest management technologies. Small/marginal farmers’ adopted broiler and layer farming technologies for their increased income.

Objectives:

1. Refine and package technologies, which are profitable and sustainable (generated by the NARS/universities and other) and facilitate their wider dissemination for the farming and small business communities.

2. Disseminate improved and profitable agricultural technologies through GO-NGO-Private Organization (PO) in order to facilitate transfer or new information for wider adoption attains higher productivity and harness greater income.

3. Stimulate and enhance capacity of the small and medium farmers and entrepreneurs through linking farm producers with marketing channel to produce raw materials for agro-based industries and value added products.

4. Strengthen research-extension and farmers-marketing linkages, capability of the BARC/NARS in technology refinement, dissemination capacity of the extension agencies and NGOs/POs and develop human resources for effective program implementation.

Methodology:

Based on certain set principles and priority, funding to various institutions including NGOs for implementation of proposals in relation to attaining the objectives. In doing so, identification of specific technologies needed to be refined/verified in the areas of crop, livestock, fisheries and forestry by collection and collation. Formation of expert group and workshop were the means to decide on the technological need. Further, field visits were arranged to collect the indigenous proven technologies and take steps towards upscaling.

Achievement/Findings:

1. Implementation of the year round vegetables production program could help the farmers to produce different vegetables in a single piece of land. A small farmer can improve his/her income as well as consume own produces. 2. Farmers were realized to the technologies and earned higher income from relaying of maize with potato than sole crop of either maize or potato. Hence the technology was suitable for generating higher income and improving livelihood. 3. Beneficiary farmers (4802 nos.), scientists and extension providers (1328 nos.) were trained up on the relevant technologies. 4. Rice productions have been increased with the adoption of improved water management and pest management technologies in project locations. 5. Farmer’s knowledge on quality seed production of rice, jute, oils, pulses and vegetables were improved. 6. Feeds/fodder scarcity during lean period was minimized with the adoption of maize stover technology for cattle. 7. Small/marginal farmers’ adopted broiler and layer farming technologies for their increased income. 8. Farmers’ knowledge and awareness about technologies were developed/improved and build up their income and capacity. 9. Production technology packages were provided through booklet, manual and leaflets etc.
