Hybridization for New Variety Development.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with the objective to develop short duration and high yield potential genotypes in combination of tolerance to lodging, high temperature and pre-harvest with good cooking quality. Parents were grown in three sets starting from 10 July with an interval of 10 days of synchronize flowing times for achieving desired cross combinations. A total of 21 crosses were made that composed of 8 single and 13 multiple cross combinations with the expected combinations of genes for high yield, earliness, pre-harvest sprouting tolerance, intermediate amylose, long panicle and quality grain.

Objectives:

To develop short duration and high yield potential genotypes in combination of tolerance to lodging, high temperature and pre-harvest with good cooking quality for T.Aus rice .

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Parents were grown in three sets starting from 10 July with an interval of 10 days of synchronize flowing times for achieving desired cross combinations. Twenty five days old seedling were transplanted @ single seedling with a spacing of 25 x 20 cm in a 5.4m x 2 rows plot. Fertilizer doses were @ 60:40:40 kg NPK/ha. Gypsum and ZnSO₄ rates were 100 kg/ha and 10 kg/ha respectively. Nitrogen was applied in two equal splits at 15 and 30 days after transplanting. All amount of P,K,Gypsum & ZnSO₄ were applied during final land preparation.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 21 crosses were made that composed of 8 single and 13 multiple cross combinations with the expected combinations of genes for high yield, earliness, pre-harvest sprouting tolerance, intermediate amylose, long panicle and quality grain. The F1 seeds were preserved for next stages of variety development.
