Advanced Yield Trial of Some Selected M6 Mutants of Tossa Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An advanced trial was conducted to assess fibre and stick potential of tossa mutants. At Mymensingh, test of LSD (0.05) revealed significant differences were found among the mutants in all the characters. Out of 14 mutants, 12 showed taller plants than the mother variety O-9897 (367.3 cm). Seven mutants were found to possess higher base diameter than parent (1.78 cm). In case of fresh green weight without leaves, only one mutant has shown higher green weight than the parent. Out of 14 M6 mutants almost all mutants produced higher dry fiber yield. At Magura, all mutants showed higher plant height than parent, O-9897. Nine mutants exhibited higher base diameter than parent. Ten mutants produced higher green weight and dry fiber weight than parent.

Objectives:

To assess the fibre and stick yield potential of the mutants

Methodology:

Fourteen mutants of M6 generation were put into advanced trial along with the mother variety O-9897 at BINA farm, Mymensingh and Magura in 2007 for assessment of fiber yield. The trial was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 5.0 m x 0.3 m. Each row was 5 m long. Distances between rows and plants were 30 and 6-8 cm, respectively. Urea, TSP and MP fertilizers were applied @ 100, 50 and 50 kg/ha. Cow dung was applied @ 3000 kg/ha. Normal cultural practices were done to ensure normal growth and development of plant. Remaining plants were kept for collecting seeds for growing M7 generation. Data on plant height, base diameter, and green plant weight without leaves and fiber yield/plot and stick yield/plot were recorded. Fiber yield and yield contributing characters of selected lines summarized. Appropriate statistical analysis were performed and the mean values of each concerned character were compared to make a conclusion.
