Role Performance of Charland Women in Maintaining Sustainable Livelihood.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The role performance of the women in supporting household livelihoods revealed that 95 percent of the char women were found to perform medium role compared to 4 percent low and 1 percent high role. About 90 percent of the women got low support while 10 percent medium from GOs against 74 percent of the women got low support, 26 percent medium support from NGOs in improving the quality of livelihoods. The family size, organizational participation, time spent in household and farming activities, social participation, agricultural knowledge, innovativeness, extension media contact, participation in income generating activities and livelihood status of the women were significantly correlated with their role performance in maintaining sustainable livelihood. Step wise regression analysis revealed that six variables namely participation in income generating activities (47.5 percent), agricultural knowledge, social participation, organizational participation, innovativeness and family size were the important contributing variables which combined explained 66.9 percent of total variation on role performance of women. Path analysis revealed that participation in income generating activities had the highest positive direct effect while social participation had highest positive indirect effects to the role performance of the women.

Objectives:

To determine the role performance of char land women in sustainable livelihood activities.

Methodology:

The study conducted to determine the role performance of char women in sustainable livelihood activities. Seventeen personal attributes of the char women constituted the independent variables and role performance was dependent variable of the study. Correlation and contribution of these variables to the role performance of char women were determined. Moreover, livelihood status, support and services provided to char women by extension service providers were determined and coping strategies adopted during disaster period were also identified. The fieldwork for the study was carried out in two upazilas of Jamalpur district during November 2006 to March 2007. Data for the study were collected from 200 randomly selected char women by using interview schedule, focus group discussion and case studies
