Monitoring Insect-pests of Horticultural Crops in Hydroponic Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Insect-pests in hydroponic culture were monitored in both rabi and kharif seasons 2011-12. Seven vegetable crops and one each from fruit, flower and spices crops were also monitored in hydroponic culture glasshouse and poly-tunnel shade at Horticulture Research Centre of BARI, Gazipur during July 2011 to June 2012. During rabi, maximum nine insect and one vertebrate species bird were recorded in capsicum, where only red mite was in major status. Five pest species in tomato, four in cucumber and single aphid was found in cauliflower, cabbage and lettuce with minor status. Three insect species was recorded in strawberry and two insect species in marigold and two species in spices crop were documented as minor status in fruit flower and spices crops, respectively. During summer, five crops tomato, bitter gourd, okra, cucumber and green-chilli were monitored. Fruit fly in bitter gourd and cucumber were recorded as major one. Rest of the species, thrips, aphid, mealy bug, red pumpkin beetle and red mite were recorded as minor status. No insect species were recorded in okra.

Objectives:

To document the insect pests in hydroponic culture.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the hydroponic glasshouse and poly-tunnel shade at Horticulture Research Centre of BARI, Gazipur during July 2011 to June 2012 both winter and summer seasons. During winter (October 2011 to January 2012), nine crops viz. Capsicum, tomato, cucumber, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, straw-berry marigold and green-chilli were grown and observed their insect pests through visual observation. During summer (February 2012 to June 2012), five crops viz. bitter-gourd, okra, tomato, cucumber and green-chili were grown and observed similarly. During the observational period various insect pests attacking the crops were observed visually through regular monitoring and counting and continued up to the crop harvest. The insect pests so far observed were recorded for documentation. The status of insect pest were defined on the degree of infestation where 0-10% denoted as minor and >10% denoted as major status.

Achievement/Findings:

Insect pests in hydroponic system are not much alarming at present as compared to field condition. But still few pests are limiting factors for cultivating crops under this system.
